Today we’d like to introduce you to Elma Subhan

Hi Elma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has always been something I naturally gravitated towards. It was my favorite subject in school – ALWAYS, and it was something that gave me a sense of peace when I was doing it. I loved using charcoal and colored pencils and expressing myself with something on paper. Naturally, as I grew older and makeup starting becoming a huge trend during the mid 2000’s, I found myself gravitating towards my new favorite art medium, makeup. I loved getting creative with colors and being the go-to friend all of my other friends asked to do their makeup for when it came to going to school dances and other occasions. I have since then grown my passion even more and decided that I wanted to share my love for makeup and my skills with others.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For me, I never expected for makeup to actually become my full time job. I went to school and got a regualr “corporate” job and intended on doing that until I was able to retire, makeup was my hobby and my fun thing do outside of my job. During the 9 years of working in the corporate world, I was slowly able to build up my clientele, again with no intention of doing it full time. 2 years ago I had an amazing year booked up with weddings and other occasions, and I reazlied that becoming a full time makeup artist was actually a reality for me. With that I ended up quitting my office job and I delved into my business, and every year has been better and better!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specilaize in bridal makeup. My style can best be described as natural, yet elevated versions of my clients. I love a good full glam look too.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you love something and have a passion for it, then you will naturally take off in this career. If you’re looking for an easy way to earn money or think that being a makeup artist is a fun side hustle, you may want to reconsider your career trajectory.
