Today we’d like to introduce you to Duane (DJ) Thomas Jr.
Hi Duane (DJ), can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started The Humble Way in 2017. The concept is built on how life humbles you and reshapes your perspective. My goal was to create a brand that reflects resilience, authenticity, drive, and focus — values that show up in every piece.
My personal experience with being diagnosed with diabetes in 2015 is a big part of the brand’s foundation. Instead of letting it hold me back, I used it as motivation and purpose. Fashion became a way to share my story, encourage others, and build a community around perseverance.
I’ve grown the brand through consistency, strong storytelling, staying connected to the community, and offering simple, high-quality, affordable apparel. That’s how I’ve gotten to where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Balancing life, health, and business has been a big challenge. Being diagnosed with diabetes in 2015 forced me to stay disciplined and focus on my purpose.
There were times when sales were slow, and I had to learn everything the hard way — from production to marketing to building a brand. But those obstacles taught me resilience, kept me humble, and helped me connect with people going through their own struggles. Every challenge became part of the story of The Humble Way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do work a traditional 9-to-5, but my main focus and passion has always been building The Humble Way. That’s where I spend most of my energy, telling my story through fashion and connecting with the community.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5 to 10 years, I see fashion moving toward authenticity, storytelling, and accessibility. People want brands that connect with them, reflect their values, and offer quality without being overpriced. For small brands like mine, that’s a huge opportunity to grow by staying true to your message and serving your community.
