Daily Inspiration: Meet Denzel Early

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denzel Early.

Hi Denzel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first started collecting rare coins while traveling through parts of Western Africa and colonial Germany. What began as casual curiosity quickly developed into a focused interest in historical currency, especially pieces tied to colonial trade routes, post-war reconstruction, and regional sovereignty. Each coin represented more than its metal value—it carried evidence of political change, cultural exchange, and economic transition. Over time, the collection became a personal archive of movement, memory, and history, shaped by the places I visited and the people I encountered.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Building the collection required patience, discernment, and persistence. Access was not always easy, and verifying authenticity often meant navigating unfamiliar markets, languages, and regulations. There were periods of uncertainty, missed opportunities, and hard lessons learned through experience. Still, each challenge strengthened my understanding of the trade and reinforced the discipline required to preserve historical artifacts responsibly.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My first passion was basketball, especially during the glory days of 2006 playing at Chicago parks. Over time, that passion evolved into a focus on community and youth engagement. I now teach young people about financial responsibility—how money should work for them, not the other way around. I am especially proud of my nephew for bringing a newborn into the family. What sets me apart is not status or title, but my ability to connect with others nonverbally, through presence, example, and understanding.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
When it gets tough—and it will—do not give up. Stay the path and work it out. Difficulty is not a sign that you are lost; it is proof that you are moving forward. Every path worth walking demands endurance, patience, and faith in your own steps.

You are not walking alone. Along the way, people will appear—some briefly, some for a season, some for the long haul. Each one plays a role in helping you reach where you are meant to go. Guidance does not always arrive loudly; sometimes it comes quietly through shared effort, timely words, or simple presence.

Remember this: there are more than thirty lights in each district, and every light represents the totem of the people who live there. These lights are markers of identity, responsibility, and protection. They are reminders that every community carries its own spirit, its own guardianship, and its own contribution to the whole.

When the road feels heavy, look for the lights. They are there to orient you, to remind you who you come from, and to show you that the path has been walked before—and will be walked again. Stay steady. Stay aware. Keep moving forward.
