Daily Inspiration: Meet Dawnell Dryja Black

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawnell Dryja Black

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was a professional dancer for over 20 years and have a deep love of the arts and dance. In 2013, I took over the Academy of Dance Arts as the Artistic Director. and have cultivated an incredible environment for children to thrive and reach their potential. Guiding the next generation of dancers is an important and inspiring job, witnessing the growth they achieve as artists and humans is rewarding beyond measure.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As in any profession, there are obstacles, but none of them too great to overcome. Learning to motivate all types of learners and create a safe space for all minds and bodies to grow and learn the importance of grit has been at the forefront of our mission.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Before pouring my heart into the studio, I was a professional Ballet dancer and worked for Dayton Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet and Grand Rapids Ballet. I finished my career in Grand Rapids and am proud of all my accomplishments on and off the stage. At the Academy of Dance Arts, I specialize in teaching Ballet and have completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 7 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum and am a certified Progressing Ballet Technique teacher. We have created a Holiday Spectacular performance and are proud to showcase our dancers technique and acting skills through this production.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I believe our industry will keep pushing forward and will become more and more inclusive. It is critical to include everyone in the arts and to make dance accessible.
