Daily Inspiration: Meet Darrien Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrien Thomas.

Hi Darrien, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Darrien Thomas, the owner of DaeBreak. The studio wasn’t born from a desire to just start a business; it was born in 2020 out of a total lifestyle evolution, a commitment to a progressive mindset, and a physical space that matched that grander vision. I launched the studio on the top floor of the historic Centennial Plaza, a space defined by its gorgeous, sweeping views of downtown Ypsilanti. Finding myself at a profound crossroads during a global landscape of isolation, I wanted that beautiful view to serve as a launchpad to build something with a lasting impact. Looking out over the community, I saw an incredible wealth of local talent, creators, and independent businesses that were driving the culture, yet they lacked the premium, high-caliber media infrastructure to reflect their true worth. I believed these artists and communities deserved to be highlighted in a completely new, elevated way. I spent the first two years operating directly out of that historic top-floor space, cementing my roots and building my creative foundation. From there, my business naturally evolved and adapted, shifting to dynamic on-location work across the region, while handling the occasional specialized shoot out of my home when the client was most comfortable. Over my first five years, that original conviction turned into a relentless, boots-on-the-ground mission where I fully immersed myself in the local community, utilizing a flexible production model and an expansive range of visual services to transform my brand into a true creative sanctuary.

As my roots grew deeper, I realized that what I was building was far bigger than a traditional media company. At the heart of everything I do is my guiding mission: “The first step to healing is a conversation.” I mean this quite literally when it comes to human dialogue, but from a spiritual perspective, I approach it as a profound law of energy. To me, everything in existence is an active, ongoing energetic conversation. There is a sacred, grounded dialogue happening between a person’s feet and the earth they walk on, exchanging frequencies that root us in the present moment. There is a spiritual conversation between our bodies and the living food we consume, acting as an intake of life-force energy rather than just basic sustenance. Even the simple act of looking through a camera lens is a spiritual exchange—an energetic conversation between the internal light of the subject being captured and the external light of the environment reflecting back at them. It is the invisible alchemy that happens when a community’s collective grief or joy finds a shared frequency, transforming heavy, stagnant atmospheres into spaces of creative liberation. When these lines of communication break down, socially, environmentally, nutritionally, or spiritually, dis-ease and disconnect happen. My business exists to facilitate, capture, and restore those essential, life-giving conversations.

Because I view the lens as a mirror for raw, authentic energy, my technical execution is defined by precision and presence. I focus heavily on delivering RAW content, which means my philosophy behind the camera is getting all of the necessary details as close to 100% as possible *before* I ever press the shutter. I dial in the lighting, the composition, the environment, and the subject’s true essence on set so that heavy digital correction isn’t necessary. Instead of relying on artificial post-production to create a mood, I capture the genuine energy in the room, keeping my final adjustments confined to small, natural enhancements.

This precise, authentic style naturally spans across multiple mediums and locations, treating every environment as a canvas. During my time anchoring our work in Washtenaw County, I focused deeply on the architectural poetry and natural beauty of Ann Arbor. I dedicated a significant portion of my photography to translating the distinct character of the city into visual stories, training my lens on the vibrant streets and freezing the exact kinetic energy of those local spots that give the area its unique soul. On the commercial and high-fashion side, a definitive, standout milestone and highlight memory for my work was shooting at a high-profile Runway show in Detroit, capturing the fast-paced, high-octane visual artistry of the fashion industry. Alongside these major creative productions, I provide a premium visual voice for diverse talents and brands, having collaborated closely with dynamic music artists like Swagright Toni and Brandon J to translate their sonic energy into cinematic music videos, high-converting commercial media, and custom social media templates. This dedication to local narratives also laid the groundwork for my podcast series, *Artist Fridays*, a passion project highlighting Michigan creators that I look forward to returning to.

Simultaneously, I honor the entire spectrum of human experience by documenting life’s vital milestones and enduring celebrations. My portfolio covers the high-energy celebration of birthdays, proms, and graduations, alongside high-end event photography and videography—including the beautiful responsibility of capturing a 50-year anniversary party for a happily married couple, documenting a half-century of love and shared legacy. I step into the deeply intimate, emotional spaces of raw human connection through maternity and elegant boudoir photography, preserve the generational love of family and holiday sessions—including my absolute favorite, custom Halloween shoots—and even capture the unique energetic bond between people and their animals with dedicated pet photography.

I believe that true media infrastructure also requires shaping the digital and social spaces where communities interact. This has driven me to partner with various organizations to bridge physical operations with digital presence, including a brief, targeted collaboration with the Ann Arbor Hub where I created high-impact content and shaped the social media infrastructure for their platforms and websites to better connect with local audiences. Furthermore, when the community speaks out, I ensure that the frequency of their voice is preserved. I have consistently put my lenses to work on the front lines of local community actions and protests, documenting the raw, collective push for progress and giving a permanent digital voice to grassroots movements. By treating a social media platform, a music video, or a community movement with the exact same creative rigor and intentionality that I bring to a commercial video shoot, I ensure that the energy behind the project remains pure, authentic, and impactful.

Recently, DaeBreak Studio entered an exciting new chapter. I relocated to Flint after initially being invited by Keeping Tabs to start working in collaboration. The definitive turning point for me occurred during a graffiti tour around the city; I had the profound honor to capture the vibrant, raw street art breathing life into the landscape (content that can be found by checking @daebreakstudio on Instagram). Witnessing that powerful visual expression firsthand completely convinced me to officially move here and fully commit to our shared goals as a newly developing team. This move marks an evolution from traditional media into high-level content delivery, intricate set production, and comprehensive media project management. To support this growth, I will soon be expanding my sonic footprint by introducing a brand-new suite of services, including expert audio engineering, premium music production, and professional audio design, giving creators a true 360-degree powerhouse for their art.

True to my mission, this transition is fueled by deep, intentional community engagement, and I am now working with organizations like Flint Innovative Solutions to drive more community-based work directly on the ground. Simultaneously, I am partnering with Keeping Tabs LLC and AutoWorld Entertainment, bringing in Roarjmckay as an entrepreneurial partner and director to focus on injecting an entirely new suite of shared assets through the partnership between Keeping Tabs and DaeBreak. Keeping Tabs LLC serves as an indispensable anchor for this growth, providing the structure and strategic blueprint required to expand our operational footprint cleanly. Through the powerful entertainment engine of AutoWorld Entertainment, and guided by Roarjmckay’s directorial and entrepreneurial vision, we are channeling this growth into highly impactful lanes—focusing on adding these shared assets to the collective ecosystem through music, media, community development, and vital health initiatives, while building out premium template development, brand upscaling, custom merchandise, and more.

But the most important reason I brought DaeBreak to Flint is to ignite a new wave of building the gap between people and history. The City of Flint holds an incredible amount of profound historic value, not just to the state of Michigan, but to the entire country, yet so many of those stories remain largely unknown. I want to use content creation as a vehicle to share those vital narratives, bridging old history with current realities. My goal is to leverage media to develop local businesses, directly help out families, and support safe spaces for people to connect and grow. Part of that means highlighting underrated local artists who deserve far more recognition than they receive. I want to search out the hidden gems of Flint and shine them brighter for the world to see, because by amplifying these voices and uncovering our shared history, we create the cultural momentum necessary to drive real economic and progressive developments. Being in Flint allows me to be directly on the ground, working hand-in-hand with the local people to cultivate new spaces, uplift community voices, and build the physical, structural, and creative foundations for the energy waiting to be unleashed here.

Ultimately, DaeBreak is an ecosystem designed to generate and sustain positive frequency. In a noisy, disconnected digital world, authenticity is the only currency that lasts. By bridging the gap between high-end media production, conscious digital design, and localized community advocacy, I am proving that true innovation isn’t just about code or cameras; it is about healing. I am proud to be building this ecosystem from the ground up right here in Michigan, proving that when you change the conversation, you change the energy of the entire community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When you operate a business built on deep community roots and a mission centered on healing, the most profound challenge isn’t mastering the technical craft—it is learning the strict discipline of entrepreneurial survival. The hardest part of this journey has been accepting the reality that I cannot always provide my time and labor to everyone who cannot afford it. My natural instinct as an artist and advocate is to give away free photoshoots, videos, and creative services to uplift every family and underrated creator I meet. But the reality of running a high-caliber multimedia studio is that open-ended altruism is a direct path to business insolvency. To build a sustainable ecosystem that can truly scale its impact, a professional must treat financial planning, rigorous budgeting, and strategic asset calculation with the exact same precision brought to a camera lens.

To bridge this gap without losing the soul of my mission, I have had to shift from unrestricted access to calculated, intentional giving. I still do freelance work, but I consciously reserve it as a protected resource for the people and local stories that genuinely need it most. By establishing firm commercial boundaries and ensuring our standard brand partnerships are highly profitable, the studio remains structured, funded, and functional. Protecting my time as a premium business asset isn’t a rejection of the community; it is the only way to ensure that when we do step onto the ground to highlight a hidden gem or support a safe space, we are doing it from a position of absolute strength and long-term stability.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have built this multimedia ecosystem to operate as a comprehensive, high-caliber creative hub designed to elevate independent talent, small businesses, and vital community narratives. Moving away from a traditional brick-and-mortar studio space, I operate entirely on-location, bringing professional-grade production infrastructure directly into the environments where my clients are most comfortable and where the rawest energy lives. Centered on an unyielding dedication to capturing raw, organic energy with absolute technical precision on set, DaeBreak provides an exhaustive suite of mobile media and project management capabilities.

When looking at the core of my craft, I specialize in delivering RAW content, with a heavy operational focus on cinematic videography, high-end portraiture, and community-driven media project management. Within the creative community, I am deeply known for my versatility with creative direction and our uncompromising technical execution behind the lens—specifically our philosophy of getting all of the necessary lighting, composition, and environmental details as close to 100% as possible *before* the shutter clicks, eliminating the need for heavy digital post-production. Because we operate strictly on-location, we adapt fluidly across genres and concepts, capturing the authentic mood and genuine energy of a room whether that is on a fast-paced fashion set or on the concrete of a grassroots movement.

What I am most proud of throughout this entire journey is my work with local artists, particularly capturing the raw, electric energy of live concerts at Ziggy’s in Ypsilanti. Documenting those underground sets, amplifying local voices, and freezing those unrepeatable moments of pure musical synergy remains the true heartbeat of my creative portfolio. I am profoundly proud of our ability to honor the entire spectrum of the human experience—from the intimacy of those local stages to capturing the raw visual artistry of a high-profile runway show in Detroit and uncovering the deep, historically significant stories within the City of Flint. What sets DaeBreak apart from others is this exact integration of high-end, rigorous professional execution with a deep, soulful advocacy. We treat every project, social media layout, and music video with the exact same creative discipline, ensuring that the energetic frequency of the community is preserved, amplified, and leveraged to drive real progressive development. Also, the music videos from the past are a prime part of my creative experience with videography and creative direction.

On the visual production side, our flagship service is professional on-location music video production, which delivers premium cinematic music videos paired with comprehensive editing packages and dedicated stylistic consultations to translate a musician’s sonic energy into striking visual narratives. This is supported directly by our high-impact concert and performance photography, capturing the raw, kinetic atmosphere of live musical events, album release parties, and stage shows. For commercial brands and local businesses, we provide high-converting on-location commercial media production, a specialized service aimed at creating cinematic promotional content, alongside professional product photography shot directly in your business environment using portable, bespoke lighting arrangements. This commercial division also delivers specialized real estate media production and premium residential listing videos designed to showcase properties with clean, market-proven aesthetics. To help brands maintain a consistent digital presence, we offer custom social media content creation and template development, alongside dedicated model portfolio development, clean corporate headshots, and professional networking portraits shot on-site.

Simultaneously, the studio honors personal human experiences through a personalized suite of mobile portrait and landmark celebration services. We offer dedicated family portrait sessions to capture and preserve multi-generational legacies, which seamlessly ties into our maternity photography and elegant boudoir photography, delivered in secure, comfortable, and creative on-location settings designed to celebrate raw confidence. We also specialize in general personal photoshoots, which are available in flexible time blocks ranging from rapid mini-sessions to extensive on-location lifestyle bookings, as well as specialized pet photography to capture the connection between people and their animals in their natural environments. Our milestone tracking extends directly into full-scale event photography and videography, giving premium coverage to life’s major celebrations including proms, graduations, birthdays, art exhibitions, launch parties, and baby showers. These services are further enhanced by our popular seasonal creative bundles, most notably my absolute favorite, our hallmark custom Spooktober Halloween shoots.

Beyond private and commercial deliverables, DaeBreak provides heavy infrastructure on the ground through our community documentary media coverage, a specialized service dedicated to documenting frontline community actions, protests, grassroots movements, and historic preservation projects to give a permanent, uncompromised digital voice to local progress. To make our media solutions sustainable, we also offer custom creative subscription packages, giving clients continuous, structured access to our mobile production gear, expertise, and production hours.

As we execute our major expansion into the City of Flint in collaboration with Keeping Tabs LLC and AutoWorld Entertainment, our visual framework is actively integrating with a powerful new sonic and technical wing. We are introducing professional audio engineering, a service that provides crisp mobile recording, vocal tracking, and sound design, running parallel to our music production services where we collaborate closely with artists to build custom instrumentals and arrange sonic landscapes. We are also deploying premium brand upscaling, strategic corporate consulting, and custom merchandise development to help local creators turn their cultural capital into tangible revenue streams. By aligning this expansive array of capabilities into a single, cohesive on-location ecosystem, DaeBreak Studio ensures that every client has direct access to a true 360-degree powerhouse for their art, their business, and their community.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality most vital to my success is **an uncompromising presence driven by creative versatility**. Because I partner with individuals across completely different walks of life, I refuse a rigid approach and instead use the camera as a dynamic tool to meet every client exactly where they are. Whether I am directing a high-concept fashion portfolio, a commercial brand shoot, or an intimate lifestyle session, my success depends on reading the human dynamic instantly and shifting creative gears to establish an environment of absolute trust. This fluid adaptability allows me to anchor the space and shield the client from external pressure, transforming the camera from an intimidating lens into a secure gateway for raw, unfiltered self-expression. I make it my mission to capture the true essence of the individual while the moment is unfolding, getting the lighting, composition, and mood so precisely dialed in real-time that the client can completely let their guard down. This refusal to be boxed into a single creative niche allows me to bring the same intense psychological safety to personal portraiture that I do to complex commercial visual production. My clients trust me to lead because they know I view their identity through a multi-dimensional lens, rejecting superficial, cookie-cutter poses in search of the absolute soul and authenticity of their personal narrative. Ultimately, creative versatility is the invisible thread that bridges the gap between technical excellence and deep emotional comfort, transforming a standard photoshoot into a collaborative sanctuary. When you refuse to limit your operational scope or dilute your creative direction, you gain the rare ability to transform a client’s vulnerability or hesitation into a breakthrough of absolute clarity and artistic liberation. By holding the space required for the real frequency of a client’s story to speak for itself through a safe, multifaceted lens, I ensure that the energy behind every single photograph remains pure, impactful, and undeniably real.
