Daily Inspiration: Meet Cristobal Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristobal Flores.

Hi Cristobal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child growing up in southwest Detroit I always had a love of making people laugh. I would watch a lot of t v shows when coming home from school. Little by little I perfected, changing my voice, too different sounds. I thought it was interesting and entertaining at the same time
Being a voice that wasn’t me naturally. One of my first voices I ever learned was mickey mouse believe it or not, he has a very high pitch voice. As time passed on I started perfecting other voices and sounds just to get a reaction from family members and people at school. Besides making voices and sounds, I perfected my craft and trained my voice with the ability to actually sing. I always had a love to sing which I learned mostly from church and later, through the years, with actual schools.

Later in life i started learning the art of acting mostly in school with the drama programs. Becoming someone different than myself, portraying this character was an interest to me as I was growing up. As I was getting older, I decided it was time to get representation for myself with a talent agency.

My agency not only represented me but got me hired for several modeling jobs as well as film and t v commercials and later came the movies.

After a while, I wasn’t getting called for work like I once was and decided to take another avenue which I was always good at doing from the beginning. And so I decided to become a stand up comedian.

I will never forget the first time I stepped on stage and was there to tell jokes and make people laugh. That definitely was an eye-opening experience. I started off first just doing open mics.

Until I started perfecting my craft little-by-little, I was getting better and better.. just watching the reaction from people not being able to control their body language is everything. I started learning and watching at a young age.

Some of the best comics in the industry it was richard pryor george carlin, red foxx Lenny Bruce the 3 stooges, the marks brothers and so many others to name. The ones I enjoy the most we’re the ones that weren’t afraid to say what was on their mind, even if those were controversial.

As I started getting more and more comfortable on stages in different cities, I wanted to challenge myself. And the things that I would bring up were topics that a lot of comics wouldn’t talk about. I started entering comedy competitions just to compare myself to other people in this business to see what they would bring.

Since I had a love for music and always have, I decided to take songs. And turn them into parodies and would constantly write daily until I got better and better at it. So I wasn’t just your average comedian telling jokes. I was also singing songs and doing voice impressions. Comedy helps out so many people in different ways. Besides, just, laughter.
It provides self reflection an artistry.

I’ve had the opportunity to open for many people who have also been in films and toured throughout the united states.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never been a smooth road being a comedian. Your challenged mentally every day or every time you get on stage in front of total strangers.

Depending on the topic your audience will sometimes understand it right away and sometimes take longer to digest what you just talked about. The challenge I find mostly is from my comic peers, a lot of them have egos or pretend too.

A lot of places I had performed at before we’re not welcoming. Sometimes its from them not talking to me, talking behind my back or telling me I can’t go up tonight to perform.

Some places have their little clicks, and I don’t really fit in with any of them i’m not really there to impress other comics I’m there to impress my audience. But I am grateful for the ones who open their doors to give me opportunities still to this day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
First of all, i’ve had too many jobs to name. They call it a job, because that’s exactly what it is. You’re there to make money. I have done a lot of jobs in the past which were customer service related. I have also done multiple sales jobs in the past. I’ve had a few factory jobs that were automotive related. I have also done security, which was executive protection for dignitaries including artists athlete’s and entertainers. For the last thirteen years, I have worked with one of the big three automotive companies. I first started off as a production worker and then to quality, and now as a driver.

What matters most to you? Why?
Giving back 2 others that might need help
being that person that they can reach out and talk too. I have grown up in the past helping out others who were less fortunate or home less. We all have bad days. We all handle it differently, saying something encouraging to someone else could make a world of difference to them. I was taught at a young age from my parents to give back when you can.
