Daily Inspiration: Meet Courtney Melching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Melching.

Hi Courtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In my teenage years, I was obsessed with taking cool photos and videos. It turned into more when friends started asking me to make videos for them. I then spent hours creating fun things on my old cheap laptop. I later graduated high school with no idea where I wanted to go in life. I started at Western Michigan University with a major in Public Relations. I soon figured out I wasn’t into that and dropped out. During that time a friend of mine was getting married and I asked if I could be the videographer at her wedding since I was already attending. It was such a fun experience and she loved it. I then had people asking me to film their weddings. I posted on a Facebook group for brides on a budget and requests kept flowing in. I knew I had a drive for this and wanted to see where it could take me. I re-enrolled at WMU, changing my major to film, video, and media studies. In August of 2021, I graduated while filming 30 weddings that year. Now I strive every day to keep being creative and doing what I love. This job can be hard, being your own boss, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way, there were many struggles. Life isn’t easy, especially when you’re young. My first few years were the hardest. Being only 21, working 20 hours a week at a restaurant to pay the bills, being a full-time student, and still managing a business wasn’t easy. On top of that, life threw me a curve ball. It drained me and my bank account forcing me to start over and love myself again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently specialize in wedding videography. I dabble in photography when it comes my way because I love that so much as well! Now that I’m doing this full-time, I’ve been able to take on more projects and different jobs! What sets me apart from others is I’m not here to work. I’m here to have fun and grow. I want to get to know you, have fun with you and create magic together whatever it might consist of.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I didn’t have it easy. My parents were divorced and my mom did everything she could to keep us going. She was our rock. I was shy because I felt like no one understood me. Later in high school, I met some amazing friends and really blossomed. I knew that no matter what life threw at me I wanted to have fun and be positive. The world can be so negative, but your mindfulness of that can spark the fire to live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
