Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Brisse.
Hi Christine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up in an Italian household, I was introduced to baking at an early age. My mother was an incredible baker; she taught my sisters and I all we needed to know in the kitchen. We used every opportunity to bake, cook, and appease our frequent guests. My mother and I loved watching baking competitions on tv and testing out new recipes and flavor combinations every chance we could.
I had my sights set on creating baked goods for my friends and family for as long as I can remember.
After high school, I attended The Art Institute of Michigan, obtaining my culinary arts degree, and shortly after moved to Chicago, where I started my career at Guckenhiemer, a corporate catering company.
After four years in the city, I moved back home to Michigan to focus on family and my motherhood journey. I have two beautiful boys, Benjamin (7) and Liam (3). While raising two littles, I was fortunate to be in a position to start baking out of my home as a “hobby.” After a couple years of managing this out of my home, I decided to take the plunge and sign the lease for Cake Mitten Bake Shop.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Upon signing the lease for Cake Mitten in early 2021, I knew it wasn’t going to be a smooth ride.
We were in the middle of a pandemic, so I was automatically forced to think outside of the box. Everything was delayed because of Covid-19 restrictions (i.e., licensing, permits, product shipment, and equipment deliveries), but everything worked out in time.
There were personal struggles as well. My mother was losing her battle to cancer. It became my mission to get the doors opened for her to see it before she passed. I’ll forever be grateful that she was able to attend our grand opening, although it was one of her last opportunities to leave her home.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
At Cake Mitten, we bring our customers’ visions to life and have fun doing it!
We combine art with baking and have the ability to take a blank canvas and turning it into something magical.
I’m mostly proud of the integrity of our company and the quality of desserts we provide to our customers. Our work goes beyond just “looking good”; it’s equally important to us for our product to taste amazing as well!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
My favorite authors are Brene Brown, Joe Dispenza, and Jen Sincero
