Daily Inspiration: Meet Chloe Walimaa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Walimaa.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am Detroit, Michigan, born and raised, and am now located in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula. I’ve created since I can remember, and all of my work is self-taught. I had a few creative mentors throughout my youth, my mother being one of them.

After graduating high school is 2016, I took a break from my art. I worked and studied entrepreneurship/business management, making art here and there. When I moved to Marquette, I was highly encouraged by my new-found friends to share my creations with the world… so here I am!

My main focus is illustration and design, but I like to try anything I can get my hands on. This year I’ll be learning the ins and outs of screen printing; next year, who knows! That’s why my business is called “ChloeLeaCreations” There is so much to explore and create in a lifetime, and I don’t want to hold myself to one medium. With that being said, illustration and design will remain a constant.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
For me, the most challenging part of being a creator is staying inspired and consistent. Creative block is REAL! There are times when I have so many ideas and all of the motivation an artist needs. Other times it all comes to a halt, and I have zero inspiration.

Over the years, I’ve noticed how much mental energy it can take to be a creative, constantly coming up with new ideas. These are my two methods when creative block takes over: immerse myself into nature and/or sit down and simply draw what comes to mind, don’t overthink it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in illustration and graphic design. I would describe my work as abstract, rustic, and organic. Almost all of my pieces have a tree hidden in it somewhere as I am deeply inspired by nature.

I am most proud of my determination when it comes to creating. If I envision it, I will find a way to make it. Being self-taught takes a lot of discipline and putting in the hours; I am proud to have that drive to learn.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I started my business in the midst of the Covid-19 Crisis. The biggest lesson I learned is that it’s extremely important to give yourself the time to explore your hobbies and interests. There should always be a balance between work and play; sometimes, we forget that. The Covid-19 lockdown, as unsettling as that time was, allowed me to find that balance and carry that on into the future.
