Daily Inspiration: Meet Cherrard Cohen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherrard Cohen

Hi Cherrard, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Cherrard Cohen Jr. Grew up on the eastside of Detroit Michigan. Being raised in Detroit it’s a lot of hard times and tough situations you could be in. I’m a firm believer that hard times create strong men. Raised by Mom Patrice and dad Cherrard Sr. Moms from Highland park and dad is from the eastside of Detroit so I got both sides in me. I have 9 sisters and I’m the only boy. Being around my sisters and being the only boy I knew I had to grow up fast and have their back and protect them at all times. I grew up a sports fanatic. Pistons and lions were my teams and I grew to love the tigers and redwings, anything related to Detroit I loved. In highschool I was a three sport varsity athlete football, basketball and Track at Birmingham Groves. After graduating in 2015 I moved to Cali to go to junior college (College of the redwoods) to place sports and further my education. I played football and ran track. In my second year there I just focused on track. Moving was so tough never being away from family then moving across the country like that was so hard. With the help of pops and my mom they helped me get through it. I stayed and it turned me into a stronger man. I had a lot of tough times out there from not having food to sharing with teammates and not coming home on holidays while everyone was gone. We didn’t have the money to do a lot so It helped me Figure out life. Also helped me stand on my own two feet. I became one of the fastest junior college runners out there at the time. Breaking a few records and becoming all American. I graduated with my AA then transferred to Siena heights back home in Michigan finished up running track. And graduated with my bachelors in multidisciplinary studies with a focus in sports management. I knew sports was gonna be the field that I always wanted to be in and fitness. After graduating, it was really hard to find jobs that were in my field. So I started doing modeling and went to get my certification in personal training. Also I started coaching at my old high school with my old coach (Coach Marc west). Ended up applying to be a PE teacher on the west side of Detroit. Right now I teach, train people, coach, and model. Being from Detroit I have a natural hustler mentality and the people that I have around me, have it from my friends to my family. Being raised by Cherrard and Patrice they have instilled the values in me to make me a better man. Moms added that nurturing side and pops gave me that toughness that any young boy needs growing up out here! I plan on modeling more seeing where that goes and also in the near future, opening up a gym and training young athletes and training people that just wanna have good overall health.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

It was not a smooth road.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan you have hard times financially.

Not having heat, lights being turned off, or limited on things any kid would want. But my parents made sure we didn’t see so much of the bad.

College I was poor. And some days I didn’t have food to share with teammates. And with us being from out of state some of us didn’t have the money to go home on breaks so we would get all our food together for breaks and break bread with each other. For example for Thanksgiving we had chips, dip, beans and other little stuff we shared to make it though.

Also in college I sustained injuries that kept coming back after junior college. So going to Siena I was fighting injuries while running at the same time. Doctors told me I should stop altogether but I didn’t let that stop me. I kept running till I graduated and still made it to nationals with my 4×1 team at Siena heights.

After graduation, finding jobs was very tough and just finding your place in the world. Lots of tough nights trying to figure out next steps and what to do. Pops helped a lot in steering me in the right direction

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I’m a personal trainer, PE teacher, model, and Coach.

I am most proud of being able to do all these things and affect change in so many kids and people’s lives. With hard work and determination and discipline.

I think what sets me apart from others is how much I’m able to hustle and grind no matter how hard things get. I keep fighting if anything knocks me down. I’ll get back up every single

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
