Daily Inspiration: Meet Amanda Rue

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Rue

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always had a passion for baking, but the decision to make a business out of it didn’t happen until I had my child, actually. My 3 year old has severe food allergies, and I quickly realized that if I wanted egg-free and peanut free desserts it was going to be difficult. While there were vegan bakeries around, they also use peanuts, and that didn’t work for us. We did try some vegan desserts, but often noticed the texture was something my child just couldn’t handle.
So I spent a couple of years making recipes perfect, and then (with lots of encouragement from my husband), I opened Sweeter Days.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, nothing about owning a small business is smooth.
With baked goods, the struggle is always ‘what do people want?’ It’s been stressful trying to find the right way to market things, as well.
Between that, and being extremely clumsy it has been a wild ride so far.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love what I do, and I think I’m pretty good at it! While we are egg-free, peanut-free, and tree-nut free, I love knowing that people don’t realize it unless I tell them. I also love how much people just seem to enjoy what I make!
It makes me extremely proud when I get a customer with food allergies and I can just see how they light up when they realize there’s someone here who they can get food from. I love knowing that I can make someone’s day with the food I bake!

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Honestly, I found out over time that the best way to network is t0 be a part of the community. I promise if you put yourself out there and you find one or two people to promote yourself to professionally, it will always come back in the best way.
