Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexandria Rykse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria Rykse.

Hi Alexandria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I love everything bridal, I went to school for photojournalism and fashion merchandising and worked in retail after graduating. I then shifted over to bridal shops and absolutely loved selling wedding dresses. I had the opportunity to transition to fine jewelry and selling engagement rings. I’m currently doing jewelry photography and enjoy that too!

My goal over the next few years is to continue travelling and connecting with new people. I finally got over to Zion National Park this past year and I’m hoping to visit Cali next. This summer I’m going to the UK & this fall I’m visiting Iceland!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the biggest challenge is being your own worst critic. In any creative field there’s so many talented competitors to compare yourself to. Being a photographer is also time consuming, and it can be difficult balancing work with free time. I personally have a tendency to want to document everything, and I need to practice being in the moment more, without a camera.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love fashion photography and editorial work. I also do weddings but I’m hoping to get into more destination elopements and bridal portraits. My background with fine jewelry and wedding dresses helps me be the perfect detail oriented wedding photographer. Having a photojournalism degree translates to a documentary style and allows my work to be timeless.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I like that there are so many opportunities in GR. I think overall Grand Rapids is about community over competition, and I think that’s really refreshing. Plus there are so many local businesses to support!
