Conversations with Wax Canvas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wax Canvas.

Hi Wax, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Wax Canvas is an alternative rock band made up of four friends from Detroit, founding in 2023 the group set out to create a unique flavor that could quite possibly be the soundtrack of the next generation. Drawing inspiration from the early 90’s and artist that came before them, four people with different musical backgrounds came together to form a friendship built around the same lifelong dream. The vision was initially to bring emotion back to a scene that they feel has become oversaturated. Delivering haunting vocals, chilling riffs, and thunderous rhythm the band quickly landed gigs at the token lounge. Once word got out, Wax Canvas was invited to open Ann Arbors third annual music festival. Which lead them to getting invited back as a headliner at the world famous Blind Pig. Presenting 45 minutes of all original music and an experience that we like to refer to as ‘Invita Minerva’ or “Against the Grain”. Wax Canvas members include Jeremy Chassman on rhythm guitar and vocals, Nathan Wilkie on lead guitar and vocals. Chris Hunter on drums, and Nina Cruze on Bass and Vocals. We like to refer to ourselves as your favorite “garage” band because that’s where this all started. However now we are at a point where we have played almost every venue in our area, people on the street know our name, which is the craziest feeling and people are finally hearing/seeing us. We cannot wait to drop our first EP/album to really get our sound out there.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every road has ups and downs. For us, the most difficult part of creating a solid foundation was learning to avoid promoters who were looking for a “cash grab” rather than contributing to the overall success of the music scene. As time went on it became obvious who was in it for the right reasons and we are thankful to work with the people who made it possible to connect us with our audience. It seems like in today’s world, making the music is the easy part!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We make rock music and I would honestly say I’m most proud of our work ethic, we put a lot of time and energy into creating a unique sound that isn’t just another cover, we don’t put too much pressure on anything we just have fun with it and I think that’s what sets us apart from others. We also put a lot of time into our product, we have spent weeks working on custom merch like lighter cases, T-shirts, magnets, stickers, etc. There’s been times where we’ve spent all week making stuff up until the last minute right before we had to leave to go play a show. I’m really proud of how our social media has grown over the last couple years from having 10 followers to now, almost 400 with 12k views in one month. I have watched us grow exponentially over the last three years. Even though all 4 of us have very different lives we still make it a point to show up no matter what we have going on.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best advice I could give would be to just get out and be in the scene. Talk to people, get the word out. Try to surround yourself with people who have the same motives or goals and most importantly, support each other. Also post, post and post! Social media is super useful for networking!
