Conversations with Trey Priest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trey Priest.

Trey Priest

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a child, I’ve always took a liking to music by listening and playing it. I played clarinet in middle school and got really heavy into Hip-hop in high school, but my true musical journey started to flourish once I learned the guitar at age 20. One day I was playing Guitar Hero 3 (a video game that simulates playing guitar), and when Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” came on, I said, “I have to learn how to play this on a real guitar”. It took about a year before i could successfully play that song but along the way I learned so many other tunes from all different genres, including Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Ray Vaughan and James Brown to name a few. A year after that i started my own band with some friends from high school and other artists I’ve met in the city of Detroit. And as time went on, I started to gain more traction as a guitarist in this city, and having opportunities to play in several bands, provide studio session work, and open shows for world-renowned artists like Erykah Badu, Gregory Porter, and Me’shell Ndegeocello. Currently, I am coming out of a 3-year hiatus to bring forth my own personal sound and ideas to share with the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been blessed to have had somewhat of easy journey. The people I’ve been able to work with have always been team players, and we’ve worked together to bring forth any dreams we aspired to reach. The only obstacles I feel that I’ve experienced comes from personal growth as an artist and guitar player, being able to translate what I hear and feel on the instrument. Lengthy self-practice sessions and collective jam sessions are what got my skill level to what it is today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a singer/songwriter/guitarist. I’m primarily known for being an electric guitarist, however I play classical and acoustic guitar as well as electric bass.

I play most genres of music, but I specialize in Blues/Funk/R&B/Soul/Samba and Bossa Nova.

I am most happy with being able to articulate my thoughts and emotions on the guitar with minimal effort.

Putting my heart and soul into the music is what sets me apart from others. Sonically, I have very good rhythm and timing and ability to play melodic guitar solos, often described as being able to make the guitar sing/sound like a singer.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by reaching whatever goal or outcome one is aiming to attain. Not necessarily being famous or having a certain status but by one’s internal desire to achieve something.
