Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon Hobson.
Hi Trevon , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Born in Kalamazoo during the 80’s so crack was in every house including my own. No Father and basically no mother my grandmother raised me and my 3 siblings. She taught us that education would get us out the hood so I carried that with me through life. Started making music in high school and it stuck with me. Even tho the streets called me and I was arrested at 17 and forced to spend my 18th birthday behind bars it was a blessing in disguise. I’m grateful for the lessons that life has taught me
In my book “Water from Cactus” on Amazon I speak about growing up in the madness. I was performing at small venues anywhere that would let me get on stage. Talent and hard work has got me to a place where I feel successful in life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My struggles are no different from anyone else I have had to overcome adversities being raised in a single parent home being raised on the welfare section 8 housing and government cheese. You learn to appreciate the small things in life.. I live by the mantra that the same water that hardens the egg will soften the potato so it’s up to you to decide on how your adversity will affect your outcome
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently teach a hip hop course to middle school students. Helping kids, overcome trauma, depression and finding their strength and voice from within all through using hip-hop music. I have to say that to this day that is one of the most proud accomplishments that I have been able to achieve. I’m a single father raising my child and a world that has tried to destroy a community of impoverished, black and brown people and we are doing great. We are not surviving. We are thriving and I’m proud of that. Now I know this has nothing to do with music, but it has everything to do with who I am and the type of music that I make.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The industry is going to go as social media goes. I can only imagine how some people felt about hip-hop when gangster rap came in booty shaking music Pill Popping music drill music there is always gonna be someone who hates the culture of hip-hop at the time, it might not be for everyone, but it has many flavors. There will always be an avenue to make music and there will always be a need for music or that it’s hip-hop rap reggae rock Alternative regardless people will always need a rhythm and escape from reality and that’s what music is. I see it being destroyed by online streaming because Artist are not able to make money it is oversaturated because of social media but if you truly love Music, then you’re you are doing it from the Heart and Not for the money
