Conversations with Tabitha Zabik

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Zabik.

Hi Tabitha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story really starts with my Mom (in more ways than one), she always had a disposable camera to document outings, birthdays and holidays. The anticipation of waiting for the prints always felt like forever, but I enjoyed seeing what was captured so much. As soon as I could I had a polaroid, then a digital camera, and so on. I would spend my time documenting my family and friends, even in the “mundane” moments.
I knew I always wanted to work in a creative field and ended up attending college for graphic design. An intro to photography class was required and I used a scholarship I had won to buy my first DSLR. I graduated and photography remained a steady hobby for me until a few people pushed me to pursue my passion, and I’m so glad they did.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say it’s been a smooth road, but an uphill one. One of the biggest struggles I had was feeling as if I was putting so much time into building something and not seeing results right away, especially those first two years; but, knew I wanted this, so I continued educating myself, networking and creating a social media presence even when it felt like bookings weren’t happening and eventually they did.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a photographer and I specialize in weddings. I guess I’ve always been a hopeless romantic, but truly I could never have a bad day at work when I’m at a wedding. It’s an amazing thing to witness and document two people surrounded by their closest loved ones, all there to celebrate them. I think what I’m most proud of is my ability to make people feel comfortable enough to really be themselves in front of me. I want to document them for exactly who they are and show them just how beautiful that is.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’ve seen some changes in weddings that I think will continue over the next 5-10 years, there’s been a focus on documentary style photographs and I definitely see that continuing. I think smaller weddings and destination weddings will increase. There’s also been an increase in wanting film photography that I think will continue, at least for some time. It brings about a sense of nostalgia that I think people are really wanting to see after having photos look so polished was the trend while technology and cameras advanced.
