Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn McClain.
Hi Shawn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My career in the restaurant business started in earnest during my college days at Miami of Ohio. It was during that time that I worked for a local restaurant. I started at the bottom and quickly worked my way up to leading the kitchen. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed the kitchen and the energy of an operating restaurant. I pivoted from my business studies and attended cooking school in Chicago. It only reaffirmed my passion for the business and before long I was in charge of a 4-star restaurant. It was during my time in Chicago that I was able to open my first restaurant and grow that into opening seven more including five in Las Vegas. Growing into a chef and multiple restaurant owner has allowed some amazing experiences along the way. The business is as hard as everyone says and takes continued focus and commitment. I’m proud of all the staff that supported me and owe them a huge debt of gratitude for their help and inspiration along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The nature of my business is about problem-solving and sometimes controlling chaos. So many factors can affect each and every restaurant every day, so having strength in people skills and time management is a must. Recessions, inflation, and Covid have thrown us their best curveballs, but ultimately we’ve been able to persevere. The business and the world are in a constant state of change, so we have to adapt while still holding true to our mission and goals.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My many years in the business have had me wearing many hats. My training was focused on food, but my world has evolved to not only being a chef but a business owner, teacher, and mentor. The success of my business lies squarely on the shoulders of my team members. A great dish is really irrelevant if you are unable to successfully bring that dish to life through the hands and minds of those that are representing your name and brand. I have been able to build a strong foundation of people and culture that promotes teamwork and a shared appreciation of food and the guest experience. I love every layer of the experience and like to participate in how those layers ultimately add up to a unique concept and dining experience.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
With so much use of social media, networking can be easier than it was before. Finding a mentor can be a bit harder, but for those just starting out, surround yourself with a good culture and commit some time to the craft and to learning. Success can be a longer process, so take your time and make the best of and value the relationships you have along the way.
