Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Bauer.
Straight out of high school, I went to college. I didn’t know what I wanted to major in, but it was the traditional path to take following high school so I did it. I was never a straight A student, but with strong perseverance I pushed through, and I graduated from University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I often joke that I should have known the traditional education path wasn’t for me and should have stopped when I often found myself flipping through Vogue and Glamour magazines in class while everyone around me was nose deep into their textbooks.
My passion has always been in the beauty industry. I did freelancing makeup on the side while working in the medical field. I went on to get my esthetician license through Douglas J Aveda Institute in East Lansing and worked at MAC Cosmetics as a Pro Makeup Artist. Soon after, I got married and became a stay-at-home mom. While at home with my two boys, I was constantly questioning my career path and searching for what I was truly passionate about and called to do. I dipped my toes into multilevel marketing because why not? It was something to do while home with my boys, and I can make a little income on the side.
One night on a team meeting, I listened to my team leader share her experience regarding Powder Brows and how different it is compared to Microblading. It quickly piqued my interest so that night I researched everything I could about Powder Brows and just knew the permanent cosmetics industry is where I belong. I found the closest Permanent Makeup training class to me and booked it with my credit card right away. I went and trained in Microblading and very shortly after taking the microblading course, I immediately signed up for two Powder Brow trainings back-to-back. Following the training classes, I practiced day and night the techniques I learned in class. I pretty much ate, slept, and breathed permanent cosmetics.
I was getting ready to open up my studio and start taking clients, but we all know what happened in 2020. That unfortunate event halted all my plans, but I didn’t allow it to discourage me. I continued to practice and hone my skills at home until I could open my studio in 2021. As soon as I got my body art facility license, there was no stopping me. Business has been in full swing, and I am ever so grateful for all the support from my friends, family, and clients. The sky’s the limit!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Some struggles along the way was Covid and shutdowns. Also, being a stay-at-home mom and trying to grow a successful business has been challenging. As much freedom as I have to make my own schedule and be my own boss, there’s always the internal guilt of trying to balance mom life and entrepreneurial life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Powder Brows is also suitable for all skin types and causes less trauma and scar tissue to the skin. This is a shading technique which is also created entirely with a tattoo machine and needle cartridge. Somebody who is looking for a soft or even bold shaded “makeup look” would opt for this service. The shaded technique adds depth to the brows.
I absolutely love doing Lip Blush Tattoo on clients, especially neutralization. Lip Blush tattoo enhances a client’s natural lip color. It also can balance asymmetrical lips and define the lip border. As we age, our lip color tends to fade, or our lip lines disappear so this service redefines and enhances our natural lips. Lip blush tattoos can neutralize darkness and hyperpigmentation in the lips as well. I see many clients who have hyperpigmentation in the lips and would like to lighten and brighten up their lips.
Eyelash enhancement is very popular. This service is great to enhance the lash line. Many of my clients come in wanting to deepen their lashes because they either have light-colored eyelashes or sparse eyelashes. Eyelash enhancement allows people to look like they have a full lash line and not have to wear eyeliner every day and worry about getting raccoon eyes from eyeliner smudges.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about our city is how diverse it is. What I like least about our city is the cold weather.
