Conversations with Samantha Cornell & Emma Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Cornell & Emma Hill. 

Hi Samantha & Emma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Emma and I (Samantha) have always been very passionate about the beauty industry but hair in particular. We both are stylist at David Houston Salon in Shelby Township, Michigan. 

Back in August of 2022, we sat down together one night at Emma’s kitchen table and talked for hours about how we would love to be our own bosses one day, how we would run a business and balance it with life outside of the salon. 

That same night we came up with a business name that represented us at the time, a traveling bridal hair and makeup duo, Better Together Bridal Hair & Makeup; not only does the name suit the occasion with the weddings, it also represents our friendship and how well we work together. 

We got to work with the knot and wedding wire, obtaining some leads and booking some weddings. Things really started to take off when we built our Facebook and Instagram pages. 

By the end of September 2022, things were full swing. Early mornings, lots of hairspray, and beautiful people celebrating love is exactly how we spend our weekends these days, and we couldn’t be more grateful for all the amazing people we have met along the way! 

We started booking up our weekends throughout the rest of 2022 and well into 2023, so much so that we decided we needed to expand from the duo and hire some incredibly talented woman to work with us and our booming business. Kelly, Erin, Rachel, and Sarah have recently turned us into Better Together Bridal Hair & Makeup Team. 

We are currently booking well into 2024 and are so proud of how far we’ve come! If you are thinking of starting your own business, do it. I’m so proud of our team and how successful we have been.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We wouldn’t exactly say things have been smooth, but we also wouldn’t call them a struggle either, we have had to spend plenty of time working hard, focusing on our goals, and grinding to get where we are now. 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We are a traveling Hair and Makeup team; we specialize in Bridal Hair & Makeup but also do special occasions as well. We are most proud of how quickly our business took off and how hard we have worked to make it what it is today. 

We believe that we are set apart by individuality and professionalism. Personality is huge in the industry; people want to hire people who are energetic, kind, and friendly. I believe we possess those traits and are really good at what we do. 

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Facebook! There are so many people on Facebook working to be successful and offering their own personal experiences. You can learn so much from people who are navigating through the industry, 

Networking with wedding planners has been a great business move for us as well.
