Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Meyer.
Rachael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was working at another salon in and realized that it wasn’t meeting all of my expectations. I had always wanted to own my own salon, so I started looking for spaces to rent. Someone I knew told me about another salon that was looking to sell. I’ve always believed in “if it’s meant to happen, it will happen”. So I met with the owner and it was my perfect starter spot. I never meant to be there more than 5 years. One year later I remodeled and rebranded to Salon Meraki. I did what I could with what I had. I grew my staff from 2 to 6 and just felt that I had outgrown my space I was in. So I went on the search again for a space and looked for a year. Nothing seemed to pan out so I knew it wasn’t meant to be. After a year, another salon owner who wanted to retire needed someone to take over her lease and it was perfect. 5 years after I bought my salon I renovated another space and rebranded to Meraki Salon & Spa. I added services and staff and kept growing. After 1 year, the little med spa next to me left and I expanded and added Head Spa services and another space for massage or esthetic services. I am always pushing to better my staff and my clients and I will keep striving for that. I have the best team I could hope for and we are one big family. It has had its ups and downs, but I couldn’t ask for more.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been smooth. I have struggled to find employees that have the same work ethic and passion as I want for my team. We were hit with the covid shut down, that was a huge impact. And I experienced some of the bad end of salon gossip.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work is my most favorite thing in the world! I get to make people feel their best! I am an educator for an amazing brand, J Beverly Hills, so I get to teach people about color and watch their face light up when it clicks and they have an “a-ha moment”. As much as I love that, my all-time favorite thing t0 do in the hair world is extensions, specifically thinning hair services. I get to take men and women that struggle with alopecia, post chemo hair loss, hereditary hair loss, or just hair loss from medicines or medical issues and make them feel better about themselves. It’s truly lifechanging for them!
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel that the best characteristic you can have is just be you. Be kind, be honest, and be a good person. My number one rule is “be a decent human being”, you never know what someone’s struggles with in life, so just be a good person and make them smile as much as you can. Smiles are contagious after all.
