Conversations with Phonzo Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phonzo Brown.

Hi Phonzo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
“I’m the youngest child, I come from a family of entertainers out of Flint. Music, fashion, performing, preachers, you name it, that was around me early. Me and my siblings used to pretend to be Power Rangers and act out movies mostly by Jim Carrey. When I was a youngin I thought I would become a rapper or a songwriter, and I still love that, but once I took my first acting class at 14 At Flint Central High School From Mrs. Young, that’s when I really found my lane. I didn’t really think I’d actually be in movies for real until my dad introduced me to a director from Saginaw who put me in a few films. Once I got that shot, I ran with it. Now I’m focused on building my career as an actor, creator, and screenplay writer, and taking on bigger roles and bigger projects.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road but I’m enjoying traffic. I always knew with acting it’s a 50/50 shot every time you walk into an audition, so I never expected it to be easy. The hardest part for me is when I’m not on set. I have love the people I work with and the directors who bring me in, so when I’m not around my castmates and I’m not in front of the camera, I can get a little down at times. They bring the best out of me and I hope they feel the same. Right now it’s still a humble beginning for me – I’m acting, but I’m also working third shift and trying to grind my way up. I’m just creeping on a come up, staying patient and waiting on that next opportunity.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Actor, Writer, Artist

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Best thing I like about Detroit is the energy. I’m from Flint, so Detroit always been like the big city up the road for me. As a kid I loved going down there, and now as a grown man I like sliding out there for shows, hitting different food spots, riding through different areas. It’s a nice change of pace, because back home in Flint you kinda gotta make your own fun. We bar hop, we chill, go downtown or hit certain events but Detroit just got more going on.

“Least thing… I don’t really have a big issue with Detroit to be honest. If anything, I just wish Flint and Detroit still shared the same area code like back in the day so it felt more connected. That’s probably just me being petty, but I do like how 313 and 810 are locked in
