Today we’d like to introduce you to Nickole Sluiter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
You wouldn’t have been able to stand me 10 years ago. I couldn’t stand me. That’s when life started to change for me. I have never liked me. Always dwelled on the fact that I’m not what one would call traditionally attractive, and I’m a big girl.
It’s been a long journey. I don’t know what changed; there was no big ” ah-ha” moment. Just slowly my heart started to soften toward myself. But I know my worth now. I may not be pretty like other people, but my smile makes people’s heart grin. My personality makes people’s day. So, what I’m a lil fluffy, who doesn’t have rolls and dimples and places on their body they’d love to fix. Right? Too big, too small, too short, too tall. No one is 100% cool with their reflection. But I’m me, and people love me just as I am. I’ll never be a model in a magazine or blow people away with my awesome beauty… but I’m cool, I’m nice, I’m funny. And that’s what matters. You can only look at a pretty face so long. There’s gotta be more than skin deep. 🙂 I work with what I got.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh goodness, no, definitely not an easy road. Suicide attempts, mental hospitals, heart failure, divorces, break ups, deaths, diseases… it’s a constant battle every single day. But I have a choice to make every morning. I can accept the challenge and put on my armor and fight the day, or I can give up. Most days I fight, some days I give up and go back to bed. But every day, I do my best.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I refer to myself as an ADHD artist/crafter. When I see something I think I can do, I get all the supplies, and I obsessively do that particular craft til I can’t any longer. My favorite was epoxy resin. Unfortunately, I ended up being severely allergic to it, and I had to stop. But I love painting, sewing, drawing, taking photos, modeling, cooking, laughing, casting plaster, coloring…I just love to create.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Well, my favorite app is Facebook; it’s how I keep in touch with every part of my friend and family circle.
The ADHD prevents me from focusing long enough to read a book. I don’t listen to podcasts, and I don’t read blogs.
I listen to a lot of Spotify and watch YouTube often. I’m usually just talking via text or messenger with friends.
