Conversations with Michelle Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Williams (aka Mickey Munch).

Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
It all started with me being in the kitchen as a little girl with my great-grandmother, watching her bake cakes from scratch, mixing her cakes by hand, I believe back then there were no mixers, and her allowing me to lick the spoon after the cake was in the oven, LOL! From there while growing up in my teens, I watched my grandmother as she brought everyone together with her love of cooking. I went on to pursue my career as a Cardiac Sonographer but still had a love for cooking especially baking. I would always make goodies for potlucks and would make desserts for co-workers’ families during the holidays. Fast-forward, Covid hit and with me working in the healthcare setting, I had no clue of what was going to happen. Everything was happening fast, friends, family, and co-workers were leaving us.

I remember coming home crying asking God what should I do. At that point, I said life was too short and I was going to start my business. Mickey Munch LLC was created, to make baked goods with love. A year and a half later I went to Culinary school and got my certificate in Culinary Arts. I’ve been going strong ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t say that I’ve had any challenges when it comes to baking and running a business. What I can say is, I’m running out of space. I find it difficult to prepare for a catering event in such a small space in my home. Hopefully, that will change.

Also, losing my grandmother this year has been somewhat difficult, because she’s not here for me to bounce ideas off of, but I know she is watching over me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an employee at Henry Ford Hospital Macomb as a Cardiac Sonographer, (cardiac ultrasounds). I’ve been in the field for over 30 years. 2 years ago, I went part-time so I can focus more on my business.

Secondly, I am a chef, my specialty is my pound cakes and mini desserts. I’m most proud of myself for going back to culinary school and pursuing my passion.

What sets me apart from others is that I prepare my food with love and know how to bring people together. It’s nothing like getting together with good food and good wine and great conversation.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Honestly, I’ve learned everyone is not going to be cheering for you. Some people may even be jealous of you because you are pursuing your passion. And you know what? It’s ok! I’m doing what makes me happy. By living your passion, you’ll push yourself to do better!
