Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle McGlaun.
Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2015, I relocated to Grand Rapids and joined a Federally Qualified Health Center, where I worked in Patient Services. During my tenure, I facilitated connections for clients to various resources, including health insurance, food assistance, and affordable housing.
In 2013, I established a connection with Nikeidra DeBarge, the CEO of New Destiny Pathways (NDP), a non-profit offering safe and affordable housing for young ladies aged 17-21 transitioning out of foster care. I became the live-in housing dean at NDP, guiding residents in life skills such as transportation, financial literacy, employment skills, and emotional support. Though I resigned in 2021, I maintained involvement by serving on the board.
Simultaneously, in 2015, I joined Bethany Christian Services in their Youth Services Department at the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation (GRCCT). As a Youth Development Specialist for eight years, I implemented program curriculum, coordinated community service-learning opportunities, and provided overall support for at-risk youth aged 14 to 19.
In 2022, I resigned from this position to accept a full-time role with Young Life as a Staff Associate. In this capacity, I work with high schoolers, introducing them to Christ and nurturing their relationship with Him. I actively participate in their spiritual development through regular youth group meetings and Bible Study.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Certainly! Here’s a revised version for clarity: Navigating this journey has been challenging, marked by numerous twists and turns. Working with an at-risk population brings its own set of challenges, such as emotional barriers stemming from past trauma.
Many face the hardships of living at or below the poverty level, leading to issues like food and housing insecurity, heightened chances of residing in violent neighborhoods, and prevalent substance or drug abuse. Breaking down the walls of youth within these circumstances, particularly those dealing with behavioral and/or mental health challenges proves to be a formidable task.
Throughout this challenging path, my reliance on faith has been unwavering. God has served as a guiding light, illuminating my way and providing strength, courage, and fortitude to persevere. I am grateful for the invaluable support system that God has bestowed upon me through both my job and the community at my church. This network has played a crucial role in sustaining me through the difficulties, ensuring that I continue to move forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Staff Associate with Young Life, based out of the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation on the southeast side of Grand Rapids. Young Life is a Christian organization for high schoolers. In my role, I focus on building relationships with young people through various activities like school lunches, attending their sports events, and organizing social activities. I contribute to their spiritual development by hosting youth groups and Bible studies.
What I find fulfilling about my work is not only assisting youth in growing spiritually but also addressing other aspects of their lives. I connect them with mental health support, provide meals, assist with schoolwork, and help them navigate various life challenges. One aspect that sets me apart is that I not only work in the community but also live here.
During the summertime, I have them over for BBQs and bonfires, creating an additional safe space within their community where they can relax and hang out without worrying about the challenges of the outside world. It’s crucial for them to have these safe spaces and know that support is available within their community.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best is the people that I have met in this city. When I moved to Grand Rapids I didn’t really know anyone that lived here. During the 12 years that I have lived here, I have become a part of a strong community of people. I have an amazing support system here in GR.
What I like least about Grand Rapids is the high level of racism and the lack of representation of black people amongst all levels of power in the city. This includes the education system, government, police department, and leadership within companies.
