Today we’d like to introduce you to Mejed El Sukkari.
Hi Mejed, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Twelve Moons Perfumes began in 2018 with a simple idea: to create fragrances that feel personal, meaningful, and unlike the typical perfume experience. What started as a small family business grew from our love of fragrance, natural ingredients, and the art of creating something truly special by hand.
With a background in chemistry and pharmaceuticals, we wanted to bring together the creativity of perfumery with the knowledge and precision of formulation. We began creating our own fragrances from scratch, with a focus on carefully selected, clean, natural ingredients and high-quality fragrance oils.
Our natural approach was intentional. We wanted to offer an alternative for people who are conscious about what they put on their skin, prefer simpler, cleaner ingredient choices, or find that conventional fragrances can be overwhelming for them. While everyone’s sensitivities are different, our goal is to create a thoughtful fragrance experience without relying on the synthetic-heavy approach found in many traditional perfumes.
At the same time, we never wanted “natural” to mean sacrificing performance. Our perfumes are highly concentrated Extrait de Parfum, designed to provide a rich, long-lasting fragrance experience while allowing the natural character of the ingredients to shine.
Over the years, Twelve Moons has grown from a small family passion into a brand offering handmade natural perfumes, oud fragrances, and bath and body products. Meeting customers at festivals, markets, and pop-up events has allowed us to hear their stories, learn what they love, and continually improve what we create.
What makes us most proud is when someone experiences our fragrances and says, “I’ve never smelled anything like this before.” That is exactly what we strive for, to create more than just a perfume, but an experience that feels memorable, beautiful, and personal.
Today, Twelve Moons remains a family-owned business built around the same values we started with: craftsmanship, quality, clean-conscious ingredients, long-lasting fragrances, and the belief that every scent should have a story.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and honestly, we don’t think building a business ever is. One of our biggest challenges has been growing a handmade, family-owned brand while staying true to the quality and values we started with.
Creating natural, highly concentrated fragrances from scratch takes time, patience, testing, and a lot of trial and error. We’ve had to learn how to balance natural ingredients, longevity, performance, consistency, and cost without compromising what makes Twelve Moons different. There were also many things we had to learn along the way that had nothing to do with making perfume; branding, packaging, marketing, e-commerce, wholesale, vendor events, and simply figuring out how to reach the right customers.
Another challenge has been educating people about what makes our fragrances different. The perfume industry is so accustomed to synthetic fragrance and mass production that introducing a more natural, handcrafted approach can require us to explain why our products may behave differently and why quality and craftsmanship sometimes take more time.
We’ve also experienced the ups and downs that come with being a small business. Some events have been incredibly successful, while others have taught us valuable lessons. Online growth has been a completely different challenge from selling in person, where customers can actually smell, experience, and connect with our fragrances.
But every challenge has pushed us to learn, improve, and become better at what we do. We’re still growing, still experimenting, and still learning, and we think that is part of what makes the journey meaningful. Twelve Moons wasn’t built overnight; it has been built one formula, one customer, one event, and one lesson at a time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Twelve Moons Perfumes, we specialize in handcrafted, highly concentrated fragrances created with a strong focus on clean-conscious ingredients, quality, and longevity. One of the biggest things that sets us apart is our background and knowledge in chemistry and pharmaceuticals. Understanding ingredients, how they interact, how they perform, what is natural versus synthetic, and how to make thoughtful ingredient choices, makes a significant difference in the way we formulate. We don’t simply combine fragrance oils to create something that smells good; we approach each formula with knowledge, intention, and an understanding of the science behind it.
What we are most proud of is the experience we have created for our customers. We are not just creating perfume; we are creating a distinctive fragrance experience that many of our customers tell us they have never experienced before: clean conscious scents that are rich, sophisticated, highly concentrated, and remarkably long-lasting. From our signature oud fragrances to our more nostalgic and story-driven collections, we want every scent to have character and meaning. Hearing customers say, “I’ve never smelled anything like this before,” or being surprised by how long our fragrances last is what we are most proud of. For us, Twelve Moons is where science, craftsmanship, clean-conscious formulation, and the art of perfumery come together.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from growing up in Lebanon, where so many memories are connected to scent. I still remember the smell of jasmine, gardenia and orange blossoms filling the streets and our patio, especially on warm evenings. The smell of my mom baking a cake would fill the entire house, and family gatherings had their own unforgettable scent, a mix of home-cooked food, Arabic coffee, fresh flowers, and everyone gathered together talking and laughing.
Looking back, I think those memories are part of why fragrance means so much to me today. A scent can instantly take you back to a place, a person, or a moment you thought you had forgotten. Maybe that’s why, for me, perfume has never been just about smelling beautiful. It’s about memories, emotions, and a little piece of home you can carry with you.
