Today we’d like to introduce you to Meaghan Scott.
Hi Meaghan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I didn’t just step into photography because I’ve been immersed with stories for years. As a high school English teacher, we can see how stories are something we live. Every person has a narrative that was shaped by others, connections, moments on repeat. Additionally, I am a Theatre teacher and directed plays for 25 years and in that role I could visualize those stories. I was able to envision the way a scene should feel and look, how movement is key, as well as composition, emotion and connection. Photography is a natural blend of both because essentially it’s a story frozen in time. I love the honest, authentic, tiny moments. I treasure my own family photos and understand deeply how important it is to reflect back on. Beyond teaching and directing, my favorite role is a mom and wife. I have loved being able to capture precious moments from the sidelines, from family vacations or important events. Now that I’m in a new season as an “empty nester” photography provides me that creative outlet I adore. I love being able to give my clients pieces of their own story that they can return to over and over again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well! Let me tell you… until this year… I was an “auto” or “sport” mode photographer. Then over this past summer I dove in head first and soaked up all the knowledge I could to be a better photographer. I invested in education, gear and equipment and truly found my passion… as well as how to shoot in MANUAL!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve spent years studying stories and stage pictures, so as I photograph I’m always looking for the narrative specific to my client. I notice the micro moments between my clients, as well as their personality. I’m not just creating random images, I’m developing and preserving their story, in that particular season, with their unique vibe. As I’ve grown my photography business, I’ve been blessed to take family and extended family portraits, high school senior sessions, important milestone moments, such as Cake Smashes. I’ve captured young couples who are building their future together. I’ve done personality portraits, as well as developed branding and headshot sessions for business entrepreneurs. I love that I have had a wide variety of sessions because it has allowed me to develop my art and vision.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like my varied background as an educator, director, mother, and wife has provided me with a ton skills, but one quality rises to the top: my empathy for others. I don’t just see photos, I see memories. I don’t just see clients, I see connections and unique narratives. I am aware, sensitive and care deeply for my clients and their precious moments.
