Conversations with Mary Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Scott.

Hi Mary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Mary Scott and I am a REGISTERED NURSE AND PROFESSIONAL WIG STYLIST. I graduated college in 2014 with a. Bachelors degree and again in 2017 with a masters degree and started my own hair company shortly after that. I had been very successful, with in my first year of business I had a gross of nearly $250k mostly earned during the pandemic.

My story begins well before I graduated high school, but I will start there. I graduated high school in 2009 and immediately enrolled in school at Grand Rapids community college. I completed 2 years of prerequisite and moved to Arizona with my boyfriend and started attending Grand Canyon University. I was enrolled in their accelerated nursing program, and it was the most challenging curriculum I had ever experienced; I knew I could never quit because I always wanted a better life, so I stayed the course and did my best to stay focused. I went through a lot of trike  and struggled financial while in arizona. By 2013, My significant other had a great job taking care of us, but the company went out of business, and we lost everything. we were dead broke. Still, I knew quitting school was never an option. I was working as a CNA, but with the demands of nursing school and clinicals, I was only able to work 12-24 hrs per week. As a result, we moved in with his sister and donated plasma religiously for bus fare to get around and for food. Catching the bus in 115-degree weather was crazy but quitting was never an option. I also had a lot of people believing in me waiting on me to return home with my degree. I graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and passed my state nursing exam the very first try. I was so relieved and so happy. I was a 23 years old registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree. I always wanted to do critical care, so I worked in critical care and stayed in school for a master’s degree in nursing leadership. I graduated in 2017 with a 3.83 GPA. After graduating, I still felt like I was missing something, and I couldn’t find a position that was suitable for me. I moved back home to Michigan to be with my family and I started travel nursing.

I always had a passion for helping others and making people feel good about themselves, that’s why I became a nurse, so it was only right that hair and makeup was my next journey. I was actually going to go to hair school first, but I chose nursing instead. after moving back home, I focused on work for a while, and by April of 2019, I started my own hair company. Lady Scott Hair Co LLC. I had a slow start, but I was dedicated to giving it my all. And by the end of 2020, I made almost $250k in one year during the pandemic. I had never seen so much money in my entire life. My company hit the clouds for sure. I also became really good at installing wigs on my customer and making them look really realistic, so much so that I got noticed by a few celebrities. I was able to do Claressa shields hair a couple time and assisted on set with a couple reality tv show in Atlanta. I also connected with other celebrity hairstylist such as Tokyo stylez and arrogant tae, they are the main stylist for nicki Minaj and Cardi B. Today, I focus on selling wigs and hair extensions and teaching other young stylists how to install wigs. I continue to support my community and help people feel better at the bedside as a critical care travel nurse as well as behind the chair as a professional wig stylist and make-up artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all. While trying to become a nurse, I was evicted from my home in Arizona; my car was repossessed, I had to donate plasma to have food and bus fare. I had minimal support. My father was never a part of my life, and my mother was living in Colorado and did what she could to help. My grandmother raised me. I felt awful asking her for any more help. But my secret was determination. I knew that becoming a nurse would not only change my life but my family’s life because I would be more financially stable and able to help them, so I just never quit. There were many struggles in my wig business as well. I had to take a lot of classes on how to properly install wigs, how to know when you have the best hair, how to properly color wigs, learning to use a sewing machine, etc. I invested a lot of time and money into my business, especially re-branding and marketing. Also, a lot of people in Grand Rapids didn’t know me and were hesitant at first to come to me. I moved away for 7 years, and when I came back, it was like a whole new city to me, but eventually, my work and reputation spoke for itself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a wig artist. I currently specialize in custom wig making and coloring. I can make wigs from scratch, color the hair, and educated my client on glueless wig installs as well. I am known for making the wig install look extremely natural; nearly impossible to tell it’s a wig. I am most proud of my testimony. At one point in my life, I was homeless and car-less and today I am working with celebrities and some of the biggest stylists in the industry. Tokyo styles is a hairstylist for rapper Cardi B, and she modeled my hair for me for free a few times. Arrogant Tae does Nicki Minaj hair, and he did my hair in January of 2022. The best part is, I’m just getting started, Life gets better if you just keep going; you just have to stick around to see what happens next. Never stop dreaming. What sets me apart is I am always aiming for the big league, I want to work with the stars. I want to do Michelle Obama’s hair one day and Beyoncé hair. They are 2 of my biggest inspirations. After reading Michelle Obama’s book called “becoming,” I was truly inspired to write a book about my life.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe in good fortune and manifestations, but more than anything, I know the most high God is always looking after me. I always seam to be in the right place at the right time, connecting with the right people. I am good to others, and I have good intentions, so good things come back to me. My ultimate goal is to be a leader in the industry of hair and wig making. I also want to be a non-profit company and provide free wigs to adult and child cancer patients.
