Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
ChokeHerSkins became open to the public in 2015. I was encouraged to share my leather wearable art collection on a wider scale by my existing clients that consisted of family and friends. I was hesitant since I knew my collection was not regulated by demand or a custom made platform. My designs were created with uniqueness in mind and only on my timeline. Therefore a leap of faith was taken without the hesitation of failure because my joy and passion of being a creator of art would not change and my initial purpose to create beautiful leather pieces for women was my inner drive! My leather accessories are a collection of ChokeHers, ChestHers and HipHers. Leather cuffs are also created for women and men. I always wanted my audience to feel uniquely beautiful . Each of my designs are handcrafted never duplicated by color or design in comparison to our human DNA one of a kind. I’ve been humbled during my business journey in so many ways from sharing my story successfully on many platforms in various places in person and on pages of magazines. Also watching satisfied customers wearing my leather designs and overcoming life challenges. My faith in the original Creator of designs sustains and inspire me daily. This is the beginning of my business journey!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh no absolutely not a smooth road! We’re definitely not talking about a satisfying and delicious smoothie here Lol. Life is unpredictable full of lumps and unsteady especially during these times. My efforts of running a worry free business without any distractions or do overs is not always sitting neatly on the table. Making personal quotas staying on schedule to keep myself focused when visions develop for creating can be shifted to panic. Despite these challenges that can be adjusted my main challenge is my health , I’m living with a chronic lung disease and Lupus.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As stated in the beginning of my story being a creative leather art designer brings me joy. My art is made from real leather and skins. Both new and recycled leather materials including belt straps and its hardware vintage clothing in good condition and newly purchased skins. Thinking about a design comes from many places our beautiful Earth and its natural designs from our Creator of all things. The feathers of a bird, ripples and patterns in the surrounding waters , floral gardens and it’s greenery just to name a few. A personal story that someone shares with me about their life and what motivate and stirs up their curiosity from personal experiences and what they see to be beautiful are important whether it visually or desire to design a future vision. These too bring me inspirational insights and details to create and maneuver my leather art. My goal is to wrap my wearable pieces around each of my clients one at a time allowing them to feel comfortable in their own perception of self beauty and not based on standards and expectations from individuals. Skin (self) to skin (leather). The intriguing question is what does ChokeHerSkins mean let’s clarify (CHOKE ) being that I specialize in chokers that wrap gracefully around the neck (HER) female and (SKINS) leather material. Yep that sums it up!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Wow that’s definitely a personal definition one must stand on .. Success! For me success is without competition or comparison not even the thought of involving those two words as a factor . Complete faith in what’s envisioned from the beginning and only based on my passion and joy even if that means regrouping retreating or revisiting my initial purpose and passion for a moment. Success comes in many stages and seasons of life. My life size achievements big or small may not be satisfactory for another business owner. It may not be enough to define their definition of success whether it’s based on financial profits or the likes of others. Being successful is allowing a humble and respectful view towards others whether their version is different. We all have free will to define, apply and activate success without judging someone else’s definition of success. Success is achieved in many ways how we manifest and maintain it with good intentions is one of the biggest forms of accomplishment
