Conversations with Marisol Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol Garcia.

Hi Marisol, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I stepped on stage for the first time when I was 4 years old, as a dancer/performance on the popular festivities of my native city: Telde, at the east of Gran Canaria. As I can remember, the passion from the music has been with me all my life.

Raised on a musicians family (from pianist father) and some other (singers, guitarist…) the music take part of every day of my life. I started as a dancer at the age of 7 (and professional from 11), being completely submerged at the hard trance & trance and receiving all the influence of the 90’s electronic music.

My family, also electronic music lovers, they taught me a lot of electronic music from I was a baby (as Bonney M) that for sure would influence me along the following years.

I started to study music (at academy) at the age of 16 (my father was teaching me piano when I was a child), getting the titulation on electric bass (2006/2011) and being self-taught singer and spending the following years playing and singing at bands and learning a lot of music of all of time (from ’20s to ’90s.)

During this time, I needed to learn a lot of music theory (scales, harmony, music history, solfeggio…) as I wanted to access to the High Conservatory of Music of Las Palmas. I pass the exam and enter the Conservatory at 2009.

Then I started to participate on Philharmonic Orchestra of Las Palmas and Gospel choirs, as I was educating myself more and more in music. At 2013 I started as electronic music singer, making gigs around different clubs/bars/pubs in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Tenerife… and working on musicals around Spain as well.

Is not until 2015 that I create my own company to manage and create events and start to learning DJing (vinyls). The following years I started to get more and more involved in Electronic Music and at 2018 I created (together my partner, from Germany) Pulsar Events, that we actually manage.

At the same time, we keeping on with Pulsar making a lot of events, I started to create my own music and study Music Production at 2020, making my first productions for Betrieb Records (Berlin), Oxytech Records (Ukraine), and some other Spanish labels, using all the musical knowledge acquired during years applying into electronic music and, of course, applying into my collective, in each set and production that I have done.

From Pulsar Events beginning, we has been involved on Techno Scene, Goa Festivals and in general, underground music, making different kind of events and working also with the Environment Departure, as our work is also focus on nature protect.

We have been managing different clubs/venues/collectives and places on Gran Canaria, with a very high productivity from the beginning (usually 1 or 2 events per month, now is much more). As we are a comprehensive event company, we are able to make everything from zero: sound system installation, lighting, deco, DJ management, of course, DJing, and much more.

Our work is focus to create a real Techno Scene in Gran Canaria with international artists and reach all those people that really love Techno Music (most of them, tourists, digital nomads or remote workers) who are used to having a very varied cultural offer of electronic music at their countries.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all… The biggest problem that I have encountered during this whole process is being a woman. A topic that is no less true because it is a topic… electronic music and business management are jobs that are usually attributed to men, in addition to closing many doors to job offers because you do not give them what they often want of you.

I has been in contact with very big companies and managers from different labels, festivals, etc… most of the times, they want something from me that I can’t give and that’s the end of the professional relationship… that’s how it actually works (sad, but true). Also, just for being a woman you need to be double professional on your work, just to don’t be judge because “you’re on the stage because you’re a woman” or because “you have a beautiful face”.

When I was 23 years old, I was offered to sign a contract with one of the biggest labels in Spain (as an electronic music singer). In return, I only had to spend 1 night in a hotel with the director… So, these types of offers are very common in the music and at arts in general.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I actually play electronic music (in concrete, Techno, and Acid) and I produce Techno as well.

I’m specialize on Techno & Acid, but as a musician, I can adapt my work into other electronic music styles (as minimal, trance, organic house…). I think as a producer and Dj, you need to be known because people enjoy what you do, it doesn’t matter if one day you play more acid and another day more techno / minimal, it’s just flow and adapt to the crowd mood, always creating with good music and keeping a good dynamic set and harmony.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
It was not relevant for me or my work, I just had more free time to sit in front of the computer to produce more music and learn a lot more about music production.
