Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Jones.
Hi Marcus, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started creating art a few years ago as a way to express myself and turn ideas into something people could actually see and connect with. What started as something I did for myself slowly grew into a business through custom pieces, signs, murals, and collaborations.
Over time, I’ve had the opportunity to work with different artists, businesses, organizations, and people throughout Michigan, while continuing to develop my own style and brand. Every project has pushed me to grow, not just as an artist, but as a creative and a business owner.
Now, I’m focused on taking my work to the next level, creating bigger opportunities, collaborating with more people, and building experiences through my art. I’m still growing, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come from simply picking up the tools and creating.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anything in business is ever truly a smooth road. From the outside, it can look like everything is going great, but there’s a lot that goes into it behind the scenes, materials, costs, delivery, time, marketing, and making sure the business is actually profitable. Meeting and working with different people can come with its own challenges as well.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how to handle rejection. You’re going to hear “no” a lot, but I’ve learned not to take it personally. Sometimes a “no” today can turn into a business opportunity later. Learning how to keep building relationships, stay consistent, and turn those setbacks into future opportunities has been a huge part of my growth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work focuses on custom wood art, signs, murals, props, and 2D pieces that turn personal ideas into something tangible. I’m most proud of how far I’ve grown from simply creating art to building a business around it. What sets me apart is that I don’t just want to make something that looks good, I want every piece to have meaning, tell a story, and feel personal to the person receiving it.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Honestly, everyone deserves some credit. I’m so grateful for everything I have, and sometimes it gets to the point where I’m asking myself, “Who can I do this for next?”
Throughout my journey, I’ve met so many people since the very beginning back when I had around 200 followers, and I’ve learned that this community really does stick together. People are genuinely willing to give you a hand, share advice, open doors, and help you grow.
A few people who played a major role in getting me to places I could only imagine include LB. He was one of the first people I sold a piece to after meeting one of my favorite rappers, Louie Ray. He gave me opportunities that I never thought were possible at the stage I was at. He was always willing to give me advice on how to grow, how to move smarter, and how to keep my head steady through the tougher moments.
My bro Iceman Beatz played a huge role too. After I sold him a sign, he really brought a leadership role into my business. He connected me with so many opportunities involving local DJs, rappers, and even bigger-name brands. A lot of those relationships helped me see what my work could become beyond just making art.
Then there’s my bro Sunny, who was supporting me before things really started moving. He would randomly send me videos of people showcasing their artwork on Instagram, basically encouraging me to start doing the same. I took that method and ran with it, and it played a big part in helping my work reach more people. I’ve taken some breaks along the way, so I’m not exactly where I want to be yet, but I’ll always appreciate him for pushing me in that direction.
Along the way, I’ve also built friendships with people both inside and outside of the art world, many of them around my age. Almost everyone I surround myself with is entrepreneurial in some way. We’re constantly pushing each other, sharing ideas, creating opportunities, and reminding each other to keep going. I really believe that as long as you show that you want it and stay consistent, the people around you can help take you places you couldn’t reach alone.
Elle Aimee, who owns Project and Paint at Tanger Outlets, is another person who has given me so many opportunities since we met. She’s constantly supported me, spoken positively about my work, and helped put me in rooms and situations that have allowed me to continue growing.
I’ve learned that your journey shouldn’t have to be traveled alone. Everything is teamwork, and everyone can play a different role in helping you become who you’re supposed to be. I’m still learning, still building, and still figuring things out, but I’ll never forget the people who believed in me, opened doors for me, or simply gave me that extra push when I needed it.
