Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Memering.
Hi Madison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story with how I started my small art business probably differs from most self-proclaimed artists. I found my love for artwork in a spontaneous invitation to create with a new group of friends that I had met in college. To my surprise, I really enjoyed drawing & coloring the piece that I was working on… My friends were also surprised & started asking me why I had never shared with them that I had this talent. I explained that I hadn’t sat down & created like that since childhood. I went home that night never knowing my life was forever altered. I felt a shift in pushing myself harder to draw & to create than my schoolwork at the time. I was excelling in the behavioral sciences in my psychology department at Western Michigan University but was growing anxious with the thought of applying my schooling to the real world. I applied to join the School of Arts there at WMU & breezed through my first entry-level art courses. After my short time in the school, professors were disappointed I wasn’t continuing my education in the art department. I look back so thankful for that pull to stay just a little longer to focus on taking as many studio classes in another school year. I graduated with a double major behavior analysis in psychology, a degree in art, & a new appreciation for a creative lifestyle. After graduation, I was able to grow my talents in drawing and painting with continuous practice. I was being commissioned for art pieces through friends & family members & I started to sell the paintings I was working on. I was able to sustain myself through selling my artwork & a part-time job during this time throughout the years of slow living through the pandemic. Since then, I have been so lucky to have had thousands & thousands of eyes on my artwork because of the internet. I focus on sharing a lot of my process & finished creations on my social media pages so people can follow along. I am grateful to have my platform to share the artworks I am proud of, educate so many more people than I ever thought possible, & connect with individuals & other artists all around the world. In the last 6 months, I made the decision to quit my part-time job & become solely reliant on my creations. I couldn’t be happier working for myself & getting to put out so many more pieces of me out into the world through my artwork.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel incredibly thankful for the overwhelming amount of support I have received since the very beginning of my artistic journey. I have not had to face a lot of external struggles along the way. The only struggles I find myself internally mulling over this early on is self-doubt.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I consider myself a nature-inspired artist who enjoys recreating subjects such as flowers, mushrooms, insects & more. I find peace in creating earthly illustrations, painting with watercolors, & printing. I have found enjoyment allowing myself & helping others to slow down, appreciate the little things, & connecting with nature. With every nature-focused painting that I do, I feel as though I am paying tribute to whatever I am trying to capture.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I am always opened to collaborate & connect with nature & art lovers around Michigan! My creations & artwork are featured for sale throughout other small businesses around Michigan.
