Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Opening L Brown Educational Consulting was a huge leap of faith! It all started with an idea I had in the Fall of 2023. I had just written and published my first children’s book, The ABCs of Adoption, and I was on Cloud Nine, but I knew there was more I was called to do.
I had heard of SpringGR’s Idea Lab Entrepreneurship Program, but didn’t know too much about it. I applied online and did my interview. After the interview, I didn’t think I would be chosen. I was a wife, mom of 3, full time elementary school principal trying to start an educational consulting business, it was absurd! But, I did end up getting chosen for Idea Lab at Spring GR. In March of 2024, I spent 14 weeks learning and soaking in everything I could about entrepreneurship. I came in knowing nothing! I met amazing people in my Monday night group, talked with successful entrepreneurs and had the best coaches. I even won the “Entrepreneurian Award”! After I graduated from Spring GR in 2024, I started to talk a little bit about my business, but I didn’t say much. I would create social media videos, but it still wasn’t enough to really get a client base. School started again and I completely pushed my business to the side. I wasn’t able to juggle being a new entrepreneur AND elementary principal, on top of my family’s needs at the time.
The 2024-2025 school year was HARD! My son broke his leg 5 times and I ended up in the hospital twice. It was the most stressful year of my life and I knew something had to change. I resigned from my Principalship in June of 2025 and immediately picked up my consulting business fulltime. I put everything I had into it. I created hundreds of social media videos, watched everything I could about entrepreneurship, listened to podcasts, did everything my coach asked me to do but it was still really hard. I wasn’t gaining the sales I wanted to and I felt really defeated. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy!
Now we’re here in July 2026! I’ve had multiple clients, made money, getting an award for my work and traveling for my business! I would say I’ve come a long way in my entrepreneurship journey, but I have so much farther to go and so much more to learn!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been far from a smooth road! Some of the challenges are:
1.) Not having a lot of money to pour into the business, but it takes money to make money!
2.) Not understanding business jargon and feeling like a complete beginner all the time.
3.) Not having many others around me who understand what I want to do and how to grow my business.
4.) Making time for my family while also doing all the work for the business…not easy!
5.) Trying to get more clients, but just not hitting the goals I set for myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
L Brown Educational Consulting (LBEC) was created to help 1st-4th year Kindergarten-5th grade teachers take their classrooms from “Chaos to Calm” with intentional 1:1 Coaching and Professional Development around Classroom Management and Behavior.
I learned during my Principalship that most student teachers and new teachers didn’t need help with lesson planning or how to set up a “Pinterest-worthy” classroom. They needed help with classroom management and behavior, but just didn’t have the knowledge and experience to do it well. Most colleges focus minimally on Classroom Management and Behavior because it’s hard to give teachers all of the possible scenarios. You can hit the surface level, but real growth comes from learning within each individual classroom. Unfortunately, for new teachers, that means trial by fire.
LBEC knows that statistically, most teachers leave teaching because they feel unsupported in their teaching. And one of the largest areas of support that’s needed is in Classroom Management. It’s hard for Principals to find time to step into classrooms AND find time to coach teachers 1:1, along with all the other responsibilities of running a school, so it usually gets pushed to the wayside while pedagogy and curriculum get moved to the top.
What sets me apart from other educational consulting businesses is that I have over 15 years in education (within multiple roles) and I am very well versed in different types of classrooms/schools. I have worked in public, charter and faith-based schools so my experience extends further than most. I also am a woman of color, so my stories of education and how I see students is a little different than my white peers.
What makes you happy?
I absolutely love the beach. Living in Michigan gives us so much access to water and I love it!
I love spending time with my family, dancing, bbq’s, laughing and actually, I really love talking about education and how things have changed. I like to give advice to fellow educators and that’s why I knew my consulting business would be a good idea for me.
