Conversations with Lisa Siesser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Siesser.

Hi Lisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into photography began in high school, experimenting with my stepdad’s old film camera. In college, everything we shot was on film, and I learned the magic of darkroom development. After graduating from art school, I photographed a few weddings and worked at an old-time photography studio, where I used a 4×5 view camera and continued honing my skills with film.

In 2010, I officially launched Lisa Siesser Photography, combining my creative foundation with the digital expertise I learned from my husband, photographer Blaine Siesser. He not only taught me the business side of photography but also introduced me to the essential tools of the trade—Lightroom, Photoshop, album design software, and more. I owe him a great deal for his support, mentorship, and belief in my creative vision.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am now hasn’t been a straight one. I earned a scholarship to study fine art, but I was often met with the dreaded question: “What are you going to do with that degree?” It was mostly asked with goodwill, but it made me cringe a little every time. I stuck with it—because art was my passion, even if the path forward wasn’t clear.

Figuring out how to turn that passion into a sustainable career was anything but easy. Eventually, I went back to school to study education and spent a few years teaching art to elementary and middle school students. Leaving teaching to pursue photography full time was a huge decision—one that took courage. Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t let others’ fears or my own, shape my future.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a family photographer in Metro Detroit, and I specialize in capturing relationships and authentic moments with beauty and joy for families at every stage of life. From maternity photos and newborn photography to baby milestone sessions, high school senior portraits, and everything in between, I aim to create beautiful, heartfelt images that celebrate connection. Whether it’s just immediate family or three generations—including grandparents—I love documenting the people.

I have a genuine passion for photographing children. Their playfulness, curiosity, and free spirits light up a photo session, and I pride myself on being able to connect with kids and bring out their true personalities in front of the camera. There’s nothing better than capturing those honest, lively moments—the silly faces, the hugs, the in-between glances that say so much. These are the memories that become treasured keepsakes.

Over the years, I’ve been honored to receive recognition for my work, including first place awards from Lemonade and Lenses—one for a film portrait and another for senior photography. Even earlier in my career, one of my old time photography studio portraits won “Most Creative” at a national competition. But truly, the greatest reward is having families return to me year after year. Watching children grow, relationships deepen, and being trusted to document it all—it’s the heart of why I do what I do.

Photography is more than just pictures. I believe family photos are powerful reminders of love, especially during the messy, everyday moments of parenting and marriage. Seeing those captured memories on your wall or in an album can be a beautiful reset—a visual reminder of what you’re building together.

How do you think about luck?
I personally believe that God places us where we are for a purpose. Sometimes that place feels right and comfortable; other times, it may feel challenging or uncertain. Still, I hold on to the hope found in Romans 8:28—that “all things work together for good for those who love God.” Life is a blend of both joyful and difficult experiences, and I’ve been through my share of both like everyone else. I believe it’s through that mix that we grow. It’s in those ups and downs that resilience, character, and compassion are shaped—qualities that not only strengthen us but also deepen the way we connect with others.
