Conversations with Lisa Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Davis.

Hi Lisa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I worked in banking for about 20 years then opened a in home daycare for 10 years. I published a children’s book (Spending Time with Grandma) in 2012. My Husband, son, and daughter loves chocolate, so after closing the daycare in 2012, I open a gourmet chocolate shop (Lisa D’s Divine Treats) where I made everything and sold novelty candy. My chocolate shop was located in Ferndale and was the beginning of my love for creating unique flavors and chocolate delights. Whether it’s chocolate, toffee, or popcorn I just love creating. example, chocolate-covered sweet potatoes drops, chocolate-covered chicken, carrot cake popcorn, pineapple chip popcorn and peach cobbler popcorn, Detroit Crave (maple bacon popcorn) this is just a few. I have over 40 flavors of gourmet toffee popcorn in which I specialize in now. I do not do caramel popcorn, just Toffee. Lisa D’s PopCraze if you eat Lisa D’s popcorn, you are now a PopCrazer! The Story behind the shop in Ferndale. The owner invited 5 business owners to his building at the same time to look it over. I only went because a friend told me to; I had no money and didn’t know if I really wanted to step out just yet. But I went; a week later the owner of the building as me to meet him at the building, and I did. He asked me did I still want the space I said yes, he put the keys in my hands and said it’s yours. I said a prayer in my head and told the true. I informed the owner that I did not have the money to pay 1st month rent or security deposit. Now I know this was God because he told me I like you, and I think you will be a good fit for Ferndale don’t worry about it we will work something out. Now I have a space and every little funds. My daycare parent told me he would help me get the shop in order. I just needed to buy supplies and a little something for labor a friend did the pluming. That’s how I got my store open. 3 years later, I had to close because owner passed, and family sold the building. New owners said they was going to triple the rent, so I left Ferndale. Don’t be said It was the right time so I could help my brother-in-law who had pancreatic cancer. after passing of my brother, I went to New Balitmore, MI. So those were my humble beginnings. After Covid, I lease an office space to sale my products in Southfield, MI. Today I work from my license kitchen and sale from farmers markets, Ascension Providence Hospitals, retail at BT’s bakery, and online website Lisadspopcraze.com. Although the road has been up and down, I would not change a thing because how many people are blessed to do what they Love.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My struggles were funding, the closing of my shop in Ferndale, and moving around to different locations.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in gourmet toffee popcorn because of my unique flavor toffee popcorn, that old fashion buttery taste we make our popcorn in small batches for freshness that is what sets Lisa D’s PopCraze apart from other popcorn shops. I make over 40 flavors of toffee popcorn some of my customers known about my poundcakes and toffee bars, so I have to make poundcakes and toffee sometime. I am known for my toffee popcorn and everyone knows I don’t do caramel. Example of popcorn flavors: Apple pie, Supperwoman (blueberry, cherry, lemon), Detroit Crave (maple toffee and bacon), Michigan Mix (cheddar cheese and toffee), Carrot Cake, Red Velvet, Pineapple chip, Monkey Mix (peanut butter and banana) Peanut butter, Cinnamon Pretzel and more. I love to create different flavors. I love seeing people’s reactions when they first read the flavors and then taste the popcorn. I am proud and honored to have received Michigan food and beverage / Corp Magazine Tasty Trailblazer 2018 award. I am also proud and honored when creating The More S’More for Blac Detroit Magazine when they ask me to come up with something different for camping. The More S’More homemade marshmallows, peanut butter, bacon, gram crackers, and chocolate.

What are your plans for the future?
My plan for the future is to continue with Lisa D’s PopCraze and look for a reasonable location to enjoy what I love to do.
