Conversations with Kristine Willson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristine Willson

Hi Kristine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into photography began during one of the most unexpected times—right in the midst of the COVID pandemic. After having my daughter, I felt a strong desire to create something meaningful, something she could one day be proud of. I wanted a career that gave me the freedom to work on my own terms while still being able to spend those precious moments with her.

When I first picked up a camera, I had no idea what I was doing—I was completely new to it. But I was motivated, and that drive pushed me to learn everything I could. I spent countless hours researching, listening to photography podcasts whenever I had a spare moment, and seeking out mentorships. Along the way, I was fortunate to have amazing friends and family who supported me and helped me get the practice I needed.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey into photography wasn’t a smooth road at all. As I started out, I quickly noticed how competitive and, at times, harsh the industry could be. There are a lot of photographers out there, and some can be quite rude, especially when you’re just beginning. I believe many of them forget where they started.

But I didn’t let that negativity get me down. Instead, it fueled my desire to learn more and immerse myself in the positive aspects of the industry. I’m a firm believer in “community over competition,” and that mindset has guided me throughout my career. I’ve always focused on building connections and fostering a supportive community, which has made my journey all the more rewarding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in boudoir and luxury portraiture. Recently, I’ve been incredibly proud of my work because I’ve finally found my editing style, which has been a game-changer for me. I’m especially proud of my creative photoshoots that allow me the freedom to really explore my artistic side during the editing process.

What I believe sets me apart from others is my mindset. I’m very much a “community over competition” person. If I receive an inquiry and I know that another photographer might be a better fit for that client, I don’t hesitate to refer them. I believe in supporting one another and building a strong community, which is something that’s really important to me.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is to focus on your own work. You are your own competition, and it’s crucial to stay true to your journey rather than getting caught up in what others are doing. I’ve also realized that learning never ends. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, there’s always something new to learn and ways to grow. Embracing that mindset has been key to my growth and success.
