Conversations with Kim Diment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Diment.

Hi Kim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Main Branch Started summer of 2011. It was a rented space until we bought our present physical address at 2008 E. Michigan Ave. we completely gutted the interior of the building, remodeled it and geared up for a fine art gallery. It was also very fun to hang our big copper grayling trout on the façade of the building. we were about 10 Artist when we initially started we now have presently 20.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We have definitely had our ups and downs, but in general it has been good. I couldn’t ask for a better staff that are like family. They have really towed the line when we had hardships.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have been an artist since I can remember but I became professional after I retired from teaching in 2002 and moved to Grayling. I am best known for my portrayal of animal subjects. I love animals and have since childhood. It stands to reason they would be my muse. I work in many medias but am probably most accomplished in acrylic. I am a member and on the board of the Society of Animal Artists which is an international artist guild that has some of the worlds best wildlife artists as members. One of my most proud moments as a wildlife artist was winning the Michigan DuckStamp in 2001 and having my Mom and Dad being presented with the award in my place. At the time, I was in Africa. My Mom and Dad had everything to do with my art career so it was perfect. What sets my animal art apart from others might be that I like to portray the part of animals that reminds the viewer we are all living beings. I understand the balance of nature and how harsh it can be. We are all just making it and if someone can relate to an animal in a picture I have painted, I feel I have achieved my goal.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
In my art career it is determination to get something right. I want to look at my art and be proud of it. For our gallery I feel it is our staff and our incredible artists. It is easy to sell work that you believe is great and comes from quality artists from around the Great Lakes.
