Conversations with KidJay

Today we’d like to introduce you to KidJay.

Hi KidJay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jason OBanner but my stage name is Kid Jay, I’ve been making music for 6 years while performing with big artist like Jermaine Dupri, Sada Baby, Big Sean, and T.I. I’m also an advocate for kids on the autism spectrum in my city. Opportunities like that opened up more doors for me to be on Fox 2 New and Local 4 as well. Now I’m a mentor for the Steve Harvey Foundation

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s pretty much been a smooth road. The journey is the best part, I had to deal with some mental health stuff in the past in my career but as time went along, I work on that and completely turned my life around.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I make positive rap music, which mean I create music that sounds just as good as mainstream, but I don’t use profanity to show the kids they don’t have to make the same kind of music as everybody else. I’m mostly proud of being a mentor for the Steve Harvey Mentoring Program.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Steve Harvey, allowing me to be a mentor, played a huge role in my success.
