Conversations with Kaylynn Hunt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylynn Hunt

Hi Kaylynn , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Absolutely! My journey as a writer started with a deep love for storytelling—the power of words to create worlds, evoke emotions, and connect people. That passion led me to the indie author space, where I carved out a place for myself by writing books and publishing anthologies under Skylar Publications, giving other authors a platform to share their voices.

A huge part of my journey has been the unwavering support of my book club, EyeCU Reading and Social Network. They’ve been more than just readers; they’ve been my literary family, always encouraging me, offering feedback, and championing my work. Their belief in me has fueled my drive to keep pushing forward, and I’m beyond grateful for the community they’ve built around books and storytelling.

As my career evolved, so did my ambitions. I wanted to see my stories come to life on screen, which led me to explore screenwriting. Now, I’m adapting my book HWY 725 which I co-authored with Octavia Grant into a movie—another big step toward expanding my creative vision.

Beyond writing and filmmaking, I’m focused on building a legacy—not just for myself, but for my grandchildren (that I don’t have yet). I want to create something lasting that will provide opportunities and financial stability for future generations. Whether through books, movies, or other creative ventures, my goal is to keep growing, evolving, and making an impact. And with the support of my readers, my book club, and my creative community, I know I’m just getting started.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ha! As smooth as a pothole-filled road. Just like anything worth pursuing, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. As an author, I’ve dealt with the usual struggles—writer’s block, procrastination, and moments where motivation seems to disappear just when I need it most.

But the biggest chasm for me has been marketing and promotion. Writing the book is one thing, but getting it into the hands of readers? That’s a whole different beast. In the indie space, you have to wear multiple hats—author, marketer, promoter, and sometimes even your own publicist. It’s been a learning curve, but I believe I’m doing a good job at tackling that pitfall. That said, it’s still a work in progress, and I’m always looking for new ways to improve.

Despite the struggles, I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything. Every challenge has pushed me to grow, adapt, and find creative ways to keep moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
By profession, I’m an electrician—plot twist, right? You probably expected a full-time writer, but nope! By day, I’m making sure the lights stay on, and by night, I’m crafting stories that (hopefully) keep readers up late flipping pages.

I’m a multi-genre indie author, screenwriter, and publisher, bringing diverse and engaging stories to life. I specialize in crafting compelling narratives across various genres, from romance to suspense to thrillers. My work is known for its bold storytelling, authentic characters, and emotional depth—whether in books, screenplays, or my movie-in-progress, (I haven’t decided on a title yet).

One of my proudest achievements is the recognition I’ve received in the literary world, including nominations for the Get Caught Up Author Podcast’s 2024 Best of Awards and the Black Girls Who Write Awards of 2024. The support from my book club, EyeCU Reading and Social Network, has also been invaluable, reminding me that my work is reaching people and making an impact.

What sets me apart? My versatility, my determination, and my raw, unapologetic storytelling. I’m not afraid to push boundaries, take risks, and bring stories to life in a way that resonates with readers and soon, movie audiences. I’m constantly evolving, learning, and building toward my ultimate goal—turning my creative vision into a lasting legacy.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Absolutely! When it comes to finding a mentor or networking, my biggest advice is be intentional and be present. Seek out people who are doing what you aspire to do, and don’t be afraid to reach out. Social media is a powerful tool—follow industry professionals, engage with their content, and build relationships organically.

For me, being part of communities like EyeCU Reading and Social Network has been invaluable. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals—whether authors, filmmakers, or creatives—has opened doors I never expected. Attending book events, and networking gatherings has also helped me make meaningful connections.

One of the best things I’ve learned is that mentorship doesn’t always have to be formal. Sometimes, simply following someone’s journey, learning from their experiences, and applying those lessons to your own path can be just as impactful. Also, don’t be afraid to offer value in return—mentorship is a two-way street, and building genuine relationships will take you much further than just asking for help.

At the end of the day, put yourself out there, stay open to learning, and always be ready to build bridges instead of walls. That’s what has worked for me!
