Conversations with Joseph Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Washington.

Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers. 
Hello everyone! It is a pleasure to both meet and introduce myself to you as Joseph Washington, a.k.a “Soulfullkeys.” I take pride in stating that I am both a Musician & Artist located here in Lansing, Michigan. With more than 17 years of experience in studying, performing, and producing music, my passion for music has allowed me to share the love, dedication, and pure joy that I put into music with the world! 

Growing up as piano being my primary instrument, I’ve been able to translate my morals of spreading positivity, encouragement, and love throughout the community into music. By utilizing various styles and genres of music, from Pop, R&B, Gospel, Soul, Funk, Rock, Jazz, and many more, my goal of bringing the world together to put a warm smile on the hearts and faces of many is what my music journey entitled “The Soulfullkeys Experience” looks to accomplish! 

I am proud to state that with the milestone I’ve reached of having 3 released singles out on all music and social media platforms within the last couple of months, it has opened doors for me to perform, travel and share both my produced music and my gifted, passionate and anointed piano skills among the community. I’ve been honored to be brought on to a few radio stations as well, such as “RapFien” radio station, “Air It Out” radio station, and more to come soon! I’m humbled to say that even “Voyage Michigan” magazine has taken interests in this music journey of mine, and I can’t say enough of how appreciative and humbled I am of each and every opportunity I’ve encountered. A major accomplishment I’ve been able to reach that I will never forget with the help of many others as well, has been performing at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the MSU Community School of Music when I attended as a vocalist! 

As you now have learned more about who I am both as a young man, musician, and artist, I’m excited for you to be a part of “The Soulfullkeys Experience” as this music journey continues to expand all over the world! Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Within my music journey, I would say that there have been a some struggles that I’ve experienced along the way, but I was able to overcome those moments due to having a strong support system and having a determined mindset to succeed. One major struggle I would say that many artists and musicians, such as myself go through is trying to navigate the music industry as an independent artist. Without the help of a record label, I’ve been learning and applying all of my musical knowledge & skillsets that I have to really put my music, myself, and my goals in a position to succeed, connect, and uplift the community. I’ve realized in my experiences that there is no blueprint or quote on quote, “correct way” to navigate the music career field. The truth is, is that it simply comes down to trial and error, finding what works for you and putting forth your best effort, and fulling that dream you may have with the utmost attention, love, and tenacity! I mentioned earlier that I was able to overcome these challenges with the help of a strong support system such as family, friends, loved ones, my team, and the loving fans that have supported, encouraged, and have been there every step of the way in my music journey, which is so important. The ability in this career profession to have a support system that can help you accomplish your goal, hold you accountable, and be there through those struggles you may experience in your journey. I can testify to this and say despite the struggles I’ve encountered on my journey, I do not allow the struggles to shake my belief and desire to accomplish the goals that I have set for myself! I give credit to my faith in God as well as he’s truly blessed me each and every way in my journey! 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
As both a Musician, Artist, and Business Owner, I’ve been able to take the passion, knowledge, and skill sets that I have from music and turn it into a professional business career path for myself! I am the founder of “The Soulfull_keys Experience” L.L.C incorporation as I provide musical services that are available to everyone for your next event you may be hosting! Big or small, I provide musical services for weddings, parties, business events, festivals, funerals, gatherings & more! The Soulfullkeys Experience music business also provides services for other artists, producers, managers, labels, community members, and more to accomplish any idea that you may have. I am excited and honored to also state that in my profession, I produce music as well both as an artist, musician, singer-songwriter, vocalist, director, producer, and more! I value and prize myself with pouring back into the community with music that is positive, encouraging, soul-full, groovy, and most of all, enjoyable! Bringing the community together as I look to change the world one song at a time is what “The Soulfull_Keys Experience” is all about! Being a positive role model through music for our youth, community, and world is what I believe sets me apart from others. My desire and pure form of love & appreciation to use my gift to give back to the world to spread more positivity, love, and encouragement to bring people together regardless of your color, race, age, ethnicity, and more is what makes me, me. Music has no boundaries. 

So, I am blessed and honored to be in a position to serve the community with my passion for music with professionalism, dedication, and passion! 

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe taking risks is essential to the further building of your dreams, goals, and identity… Sometimes doing things that may cause you to be outside of your comfort zone are the things that we need to experience to be pushed in a beautiful, unique, and special way both physically, mentally, and emotionally. I have had to take risks in my profession, and regardless of the fea or reserved feelings I may have had in the moment of those experiences, I look back now with a heavy amount of gratitude and appreciation as those moments have helped my music journey grow in so many ways. Whether it’s deciding if I should go to certain events to network or perform, hire or pass on certain artists & musicians to work with, or making financial decisions to fund my career, these are all risks I’ve been able to experience and learn from. Risk-taking, I believe is absolutely necessary to get where you want to go. Being uncomfortable and unsure of what the outcome to a risky decision may be is okay, and we should as a society normalize that. I do view myself as a risk taker but there is a balance and certain level of maturity, reasonable thinking, and sense of being able to asses variables in the process of risk-taking that I encompass and think everyone should be aware of.
