Conversations with Jordan Currie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Currie.

Hi Jordan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I think of how I started, I always have to go back to being a child. From the time I was four I can remember always loving movies. Some of my earliest memories are watching the movies my parents owned on VHS or on DVD. Like The Temptations, Rush Hour, Rocky, Star Wars, etc. I enjoyed quoting lines from all of those movies as a kid and making my family laugh whenever I got the chance to. As I grew older I was a diving more into being an athlete.

I had the privilege of playing baseball with my father as my coach during the summer. During that time I learned a lot about accountability, discipline, teamwork, and confidence. While doing that my curiosity for writing and film grew from just being a fan of watching, into wanting to learn the ins and outs of making a movie.

I graduated high school in 2017. After a year at Eastern Michigan I enrolled into Motion Picture Institute. There, I was able to be a sponge and learn as much as possible about each step of making a film, each roll that partakes in it, and also meet the guys who I would start a production company with called Fellpeller Studios. After our time at MPI, we would go on to produce four feature films. ‘Crow’, ‘Camp Murder’, ‘Saturnalia’, and my writing and directorial debut titled ‘Made For This’.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
A smooth road? No. For me, I’m of the understanding that if you are chasing greatness, the road can’t be smooth. It takes risks, a lot of errors, and a lot of no’s. But I also understand that the art of filmmaking is a marathon not a sprint.

Some of the struggles are all internal.‘Made For This’ was released two years ago on Tubi and I am very proud of what we all created in that time. I was twenty years old and now I’m twenty six and grow eager day by day to do it again. With wanting to do it again, the thoughts that can go in my head of “Am I doing enough?” “Why haven’t I made another film?” “When will the next the opportunity happen?”, etc. All of these thoughts are things that grow through my mind as time goes on. So the real struggle I feel is what can I do in the twenty four hours I’ve been given in a day to get one step closer or more prepared when that opportunity presents itself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a writer, director, gaffer, and key grip, Writing has always been in my heart since I was young and easily my favorite aspect of filmmaking. I am known in the area as a gaffer or key grip as I have over a dozen credits to local indie films in the area under that role. Gaffing/Key gripping allows me to work with other creatives from the area and learn things I never knew, new ways to go about getting something done, and understanding the art of filmmaking on a technical aspect.

I am most proud of my work with ‘Made For This’. Being so young and hungry to make a feature film was something I dreamt of from the time I was fourteen years old. To see a script I started when I was seventeen go from script to screen is one of the most euphoric feelings I’ve ever felt in my life. It’s like The Ohio Players said “Heaven must be like this!”

I believe what sets me apart is my writing ability. I know there is not a single genre that I cannot dive into and make a compelling story.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
This a very difficult question for me, because I honestly have so many great memories. I can’t pinpoint one specific but I grew up on Six Mile and Winthrop. Being there with my grandma, the late Shirley Currie and my Grandfather Jesse Currie, this was truly a kids oasis. My grandmother cooking all day every day, any kind of snack you wanted, and all the laughs and stories between the two were some of the greatest times in my life. On top of that, being with my big brother, my cousins, and neighborhood friends, there was never a dull day on Winthrop and all of the characters that we encountered on that street are some my biggest inspirations to this very day.
