Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Beth.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my apprenticeship around 9 years ago at Eternal Tattoos Eastpointe. My tattoo journey didn’t just start there. I had another apprenticeship for years prior but Iife had thrown me other plans and I had left Michigan to move to California. Sadly convincing an artist to want to take the time to acquire an apprentice was hard out there. I worked at a Whole Foods and embraced the foodie I am and was for years to come. I got tired of big city life and was getting older. I needed my outlet for art and creating. I made a few very close life long friends in San Francisco that I am still in touch with today and also have a couple of my very early on pieces! I came back to Michigan and found my way to Eternal. I got very lucky and am forever grateful for the guys that took me in and took the time and had the patience to teach me. I always had a love and infatuation with tattoos and art for as long as I can remember. I had always drawn in and on everything I could get my hands on. Art has always been my reason for the season. To be able to create art on skin was just astonishing and incredible to me. When I was 12 I would collect all the change I could to save up enough to add to my tattoo magazine collection I flipped through over and over again. I actually still have them all in a suitcase.. more like a time capsule.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was hard getting in to the industry for me. Nobody wanted a little girl around all the time asking annoying questions for free. I started at one shop and really was treated like an ugly step child. I left to SF and went back to the same shop when I came back to Michigan. I knew I wasn’t going to get far there. I was super fortunate to get my foot in the door at Eternal. Cleaning, scrubbing toilets, lunch runs you name it. I was on it. I feel like apprenticeships are a little different now but I had duties, chores and dedication to prove. Believing in yourself is also a huge struggle. We are the hardest on ourselves especially being artists.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love tattooing. I love fine art and also creating mixed media art. I feel like most of my craft is a bit on the darker macabre forest swamp witch side if you know what I mean. Art is created in so many forms for me it is so hard to keep it contained into one style. I guess that’s the best way to put it. Tattoo wise I love creating elvish, witchy, nature prancing horned feminine figures amidst lagoons and glowing stars. Sacred geometry is also one of my favorite styles. I just love tattooing. Fine art for me is also a passion. We have a 10 month old little girl now so painting and fine art on the side has been on a bit of a back burner. I’m sure I’ll get back to it in the future
What are your plans for the future?
No big changes here. Just kidding. It has been a change balancing my career and personal life for the better. My husband Scott and I have a beautiful little girl and are looking forward to our adventures! We love taking her to the Detroit Institute of Arts and are planning to expose her to as many forms of creativity possible. I strive to continue to grow as an artist and create. I am so fortunate to have the support I have and the beautiful ideas and concepts of my amazing clients. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to do what I love as a career.
