Conversations with Jamie Ita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Ita.

Hi Jamie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for exploring and experiencing new places really began during a six week study abroad program in Italy while I was in college. That trip opened my eyes to how much there is to learn through travel, different cultures, and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It sparked a curiosity that has stayed with me ever since.

Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to visit 24 countries and 18 states. Every destination has taught me something new and shaped the way I see the world.

After years of traveling, I started to realize that the same excitement I felt exploring a new city or country could be found much closer to home. I began approaching Michigan the way I approached my travels—with curiosity and a willingness to try something new. Whether it was discovering a small town, finding a hidden gem restaurant, attending a local event, or taking a weekend road trip, I realized there was so much of my own state left to explore.

That perspective eventually inspired me to start sharing my adventures and encouraging others to explore Michigan the way they might explore a new city or country.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing my passion for travel and content creation with a full-time career in healthcare. As a registered nurse, my work requires a lot of focus, energy, and dedication, which has taught me the importance of being intentional with my time.

I’ve also learned that comparison can be a trap. It’s easy to look at someone else’s success and forget that every journey starts with a first post, a first opportunity, and a willingness to keep showing up even when growth feels slow.

What has kept me going is a genuine passion for exploring, discovering new places, and sharing experiences that might inspire someone else’s next adventure. Looking back, those challenges have taught me patience, confidence, and the importance of staying authentic. The opportunities, relationships, and experiences that have come from taking that chance have made it all worthwhile.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professionally, I wear a few different hats. I’m a registered nurse and the creator behind @jamieinmetrodetroit, a Michigan-based travel and lifestyle platform focused on helping people discover hidden gems, local businesses, events, and unique experiences throughout Metro Detroit and beyond.

What I’m most proud of is building a platform that encourages people to explore their own communities while supporting the small businesses, destinations, and entrepreneurs that make Michigan special. Through my content, I strive to inspire curiosity, connection, and a sense of adventure close to home.

What sets me apart is my passion for storytelling and my genuine love of discovering places that others might overlook. Rather than focusing on what’s already popular, I enjoy highlighting experiences that help people see Michigan in a new way and create meaningful connections with the communities around them.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that when you’re genuinely passionate about something, it doesn’t feel like work. I love discovering new places, finding unique things to do, and exploring our incredibly beautiful state. Whether it’s a hidden gem, a local event, a charming small town, or a weekend getaway, those experiences genuinely energize me and remind me why I started.

I’ve also learned that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. Some of the best opportunities in my life have come from being willing to take a chance, follow my curiosity, and see where it leads.
