Today we’d like to introduce you to Ideeyah Supreme.
Hi Ideeyah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I was born and raised on the East side of Detroit, Conant Gardens, specifically. From an early age, I knew I was going to make music in some capacity. I was always participating in talent shows, glee club, asking for solos–all of that. Throughout high school, I traveled the nation performing with the Detroit High School of Arts & the Mosaic Youth Theater before attending Wayne State University to study education. While at Wayne State, I performed in an R&B female trio, NrahBi, where I met my longtime friend, brother, and fellow musician, D-Love Muzik. I was only 18 years old when we met and became friends, but the vibe was absolutely there, and we’ve been family ever since.
I ended up leaving the trio to pursue some other ventures and started a techno-pop duo (Green T) with a very talented guitarist & producer by the name Tom Stoepker. After Green T disbanded, I went on to form a soul band with my former husband & business partner called Collective Peace (which also featured my longtime friend & brother D-Love Muzik). Our band toured and collaborated with so many of my musical heroes, such as Jessica care Moore, Zo!, Dwele, and Amp Fiddler.
In 2013, I began exploring house & tech-soul music with Jon Dixon, DeSean Jones, Waajeed, and Theo Parrish. In 2014, I recorded and toured Europe with Theo Parrish & Amp Fiddler, which turned into one of the most enlightening experiences of my life. Collective Peace released their first full-length album in 2016, and I released my first solo album, Brave, in June 2017. I toured Brave for 2 years before deciding to take a hiatus in 2020. It’s been a long time since I’ve released new music, but the project is slated to be released later this year. It features collaborations with 2 of my favorite creators Meftah & Sophiyah Elizabeth.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been quite the journey. There are times when I feel [as an artist] that I know exactly what I’m doing, what direction I’m going in, what to write/say, how to engage my listeners & supporters… and then there have been other times when I’ve felt completely lost & disconnected. I’m not sure if that’s talked about enough in artist circles– the moments when you feel disconnected from your craft and sometimes disconnected from yourself. Certainly, there are those moments of frustration that have tangible solutions… but some of my biggest struggles came from moments of feeling inadequate. I’ve been able to shake out of it most times and let those moments just be ‘moments.’
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a full-time creator. I download messages from the Universe and work with other to shape those messages into songs. That is the best way I can describe ‘my work.’
What do you think about happiness?
Love makes me happy. Giving & receiving love makes me feel so happy & fulfilled. Giving myself permission to rest, getting an unexpected hug from my preteen son, a thoughtful & encouraging message from my lover, cooking delicious meals for my friends while we engage in all kinds of conversation, or a quick check-in phone call with my mom– all love. It all brings me joy. It all inspires me to create more moments in love. When I’m inspired, I’m happy.
