Conversations with Houda Hourani

Today we’d like to introduce you to Houda Hourani.

Hi Houda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up as the child of immigrant parents, I often felt different from my peers. I didn’t have the “right” clothes or the trendy hairstyles, and it was hard to feel like I fit in. As a child, that weighed on me, but it also pushed me to discover ways to feel my best. I turned to hair and makeup, learning how to transform my appearance with small changes that made me feel confident. It became a quiet form of survival—and eventually, my passion.

At 15, I got my first job as a cashier at a grocery store called Harbor Imports, but even there, I found ways to share what I was learning. I would invite friends to the back of the store to blow-dry their hair before events, eager to help them feel beautiful. Thinking back, even in seventh grade I convinced a friend I could reshape her eyebrows in the school bathroom (and we both got in trouble for it). These small moments were more than childhood experiments; they were early signs of the career I was meant to pursue—helping others discover confidence and beauty, just as I had to learn to do for myself.

While I attended college briefly, I knew deep down I wasn’t meant to follow the traditional path. Dropping out to attend beauty school wasn’t easy, especially knowing my parents hoped I would earn a degree, but it felt right. By 18, I was working in salons, driven to master every aspect of hair and makeup, often staying up late researching techniques until I perfected them.

When social media was still new, I boldly shared my work online while others hesitated. This consistency allowed me to build connections and grow my client base, setting me apart during a time when posting your work wasn’t the norm.

In my late twenties, as a single mother to my daughter, I made the bold decision to purchase a struggling salon—Salon West Dearborn—with my brother. That season of my life pushed me to work harder than ever to create the life I wanted for us. Together, we transformed the salon into one of Michigan’s busiest and most reputable beauty destinations. We built a brand known for excellence and warmth, creating a space where our team and clients felt valued. It became our second home for over a decade.

During these years, I also ventured into permanent makeup and wig creation. Growing up with a scar on my eyebrow led me to explore cosmetic tattooing to cover it, sparking a passion to help others feel confident about their brows. My own hair struggles inspired me to create wigs for individuals experiencing hair loss due to alopecia, cancer treatments, or hereditary conditions, blending artistry with compassion.

When the Covid pandemic hit, I was newly remarried and had just welcomed my son into the world, and it changed everything. Becoming a mother again during such an uncertain time made me reevaluate the life I wanted for myself and my family. I realized I needed more balance and presence in my life, leading me to make the bold, bittersweet decision to sell Salon West Dearborn at the height of its success, closing a defining chapter of my career.

Since then, I’ve focused on what I love most: bridal hair and makeup, tattoo artistry, and wig creation. I now freelance, traveling across Michigan, the U.S., and occasionally internationally, taking only one bride per day to provide undivided attention. This approach allows me to deliver deeply personalized service while living in alignment with the life I want for myself and my family.

Transitioning from salon ownership to freelancing has redefined my understanding of success. It has allowed me to be present with my husband and children and even opened the space for us to grow our family by adopting our youngest son.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that everything unfolds exactly as it should when you trust the process. My career path may look different from others, but to me, success is living with intention, serving others, and creating beauty in a way that aligns with your values and your season of life.

Today, I feel grateful to do what I love while being present for the people I love, helping others see the beauty in themselves—one client at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road to success, I’ve learned the hard way, is not linear. There are many ups and downs, and a lot of failure comes before you reach success. You have to lose along the way to appreciate the wins and to understand what it truly takes to grow. It has been challenging, but every challenge has shaped me into the person I am today.

If I had to single out my biggest challenge, it would be finding balance between motherhood and my professional life. Being passionate and driven while staying present for your family is not easy, but it has taught me that the real measure of success is not just what you achieve, but how gently you can hold what matters most while you’re reaching for it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a bridal hair and makeup artist, permanent makeup artist, and wig creator with over two decades of experience in the beauty industry. I specialize in working with brides, taking only one bride a day so I can give her my full, undivided attention, ensuring she feels beautiful, seen, and cared for on one of the most important days of her life. I am also known for my brow tattoo artistry, which began as a personal journey to cover my own eyebrow scar and evolved into helping others regain confidence through natural, customized brow work. Additionally, I create wigs for individuals experiencing hair loss, combining artistry with compassion to help them feel themselves again.

Alongside serving clients, I also host one-on-one personalized, hands-on masterclasses for artists who want to elevate their craft with advanced, real-world techniques and artistry rooted in both precision and heart.

What sets me apart is my commitment to precision, a personalized approach, and a calming presence that clients often say helps ease the stress of big moments. I’ve learned to blend technical skill with intuition, creating styles that photograph beautifully while making my clients feel like the best version of themselves. I’m most proud that my work doesn’t just change how people look—it changes how they feel, and that is the true heart of what I do.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about our city is its diversity and resilience. There’s a sense of community here, and I’ve seen people show up for one another during both joyful and challenging times. The creative energy and small businesses that thrive here inspire me every day.

What I like least is the inconsistency in support for these small businesses and families who are working so hard to build a better future. I wish there were more programs and resources to help them grow and feel secure while staying in the city they love.
