Today we’d like to introduce you to Gift Sukez Sukali
Hi Gift, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I founded HD Plus Creations Ltd at the age of 20 during my first year at colleg. My early passion for computers and graphics was influenced by my father, who was a photographer, and my cousin, a talented artist. In my first year, I was introduced to graphic design software, and I quickly mastered tools like Photoshop, initially as a hobby. By my second year in 2013, I developed an interest in motion pictures and began learning video production. I soon gained recognition for my work on campus, and as demand grew, I realized I could turn my skills into a viable business.
I registered the company as a sole proprietorship, and by the time I graduated, HD Plus Creations had become well-known. After college, I partnered with others to expand the business, starting in a small room in a commercial area in Malawi. Within six months, we registered as a limited company, opened an office in Blantyre City, and grew the team from 2 to 20 people within four years.
Our company has had the privilege of working with several influential individuals, governments, and reputable organizations, including the UN, JTI, Standard Bank, Global Climate Fund, Illovo, UNICEF, and CHIRA Fund, among others.
In 2020, I directed my debut film, “Fatsani: Tale of Survival,” which was selected to represent Malawi at the Oscars. This achievement earned me invitations to various countries, including Australia, South Africa, Zambia, and the United States, garnering international recognition.
In 2022, I was honored with a prestigious Fulbright scholarship to study film in the United States. I spent six weeks in an English program at Michigan State University before continuing my studies at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
As a young entrepreneur, I was recognized by Forbes Africa as one of the remarkable achievers under the age of 30. My goal is to establish HD Plus Creations as a market leader not only in Malawi and Africa but globally. I envision a future where HD Plus Creations is synonymous with video content and digital advertising, with branches across Africa producing movies, TV commercials, TV shows, and edutainment videos.
Additionally, I aim to venture into digital advertising with large-scale digital screens across Africa and Europe. By 2040, I hope to employ at least 1,000 people in Malawi, contributing to community development and helping young people establish themselves through entrepreneurship. I am actively involved with Entrepreneurs in Action (ENACTIM), where I provide inspirational talks and career guidance to promote entrepreneurship among the youth. I encourage young people to invest in their skills and find ways to turn their hobbies into thriving businesses.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has certainly not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was the lack of capital. Starting HD Plus Creations while still in college meant that I had limited financial resources. Securing funding to purchase essential equipment like cameras, computers, and software was a significant hurdle. I often had to make do with whatever tools were available, which sometimes meant compromising on the quality of work or turning down projects due to a lack of proper equipment.
Another challenge was balancing my studies with running a business. Managing time and resources was difficult, especially when the demand for my services began to grow, but the capital to expand was not readily available. Despite these challenges, I remained focused on building the business and reinvested any earnings back into the company to gradually acquire better equipment and expand our capabilities. The experience taught me the value of perseverance, resourcefulness, and making the most of limited resources.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a film director, producer, and digital marketer specializing in films. My work primarily focuses on creating impactful visual stories that resonate with audiences both locally and internationally. I’m particularly known for my dedication to detail and my distinctive style, which sets me apart in the industry. My approach combines a deep understanding of visual storytelling with a strong commitment to quality, ensuring that every project I undertake stands out.
One of the proudest moments in my career was when my debut film, Fatsani: Tale of Survival, was selected to represent Malawi at the Oscars. This recognition not only brought international attention to my work but also highlighted the potential of African cinema on the global stage. Beyond this, I am incredibly proud of the impact my work has had on my community. Through HD Plus Creations, I have been able to provide employment opportunities to young people, helping them develop their skills and pursue their passions.
Being recognized by awards such as the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 has also been a significant milestone in my journey. These achievements, combined with my passion for storytelling and my commitment to elevating the film industry in Africa, are what truly set me apart from others in the field. My goal is to continue pushing boundaries, both in my creative work and in the opportunities I create for others.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as the ability to create a meaningful impact on the world and in the lives of others. It’s not just about personal achievements or recognition but about using my skills and passion to help others grow and succeed. For me, success is seeing the tangible difference my work makes—whether it’s through the stories I bring to life on screen, the opportunities I create for young people, or the innovative ideas that start as just a spark and grow into something real and impactful. Creating something new from thin air and watching it inspire, empower, and uplift others is the true measure of success in my eyes.
