Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Mohr.
Derek, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2011, and spent the following 15 years in various different design roles. After being a designer for the dining services at NMU, I joined a startup in Grand Rapids, MI as a social media “rockstar”, then digital media designer for a large corporate office, to a software company, to a web designer at an agency, full-stack web developer for another agency—and now, an occasionally successful full-time freelancer!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting to the point of freelancing certainly had plenty of bumps, since it required learning a multitude of different skillsets—none of which were “how to start a business”.
The first year of freelancing was a unique case, as there was always an opportunity to pair with another agency and plenty of contracts being sent. The next year was under the new administration, and almost every pond dried up immediately. Not many people can invest extra money into their businesses or clients when they aren’t sure what funding will exist the next month.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I like to refer to myself as a one-person agency or studio. I specialize in all aspects of branding, including building websites from scratch with my own code. My design style is also based largely in bauhaus and modernist principles, to give the final product more of a “timeless” feel, rather than relying on trends and templates.
