Today we’d like to introduce you to Deata McLemore.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Originally pursuing a degree in Business Management, I soon discovered that my passion for nurturing and teaching far outweighed my interest in accounting, spreadsheet development, and analytical projections. It all started one day at our kitchen table while helping my oldest pair (but back then, my only two) with homework.
As I sat and watched my children struggle with grasping the concepts of their assignments, it became clear that the lacking comprehension was rooted in the fact that every child’s learning style tends to differ and was also due to the small amount of time that was going into their academic development. However, as time progressed and with my input, it was definitely apparent that the light bulbs had come on and were shining brighter than the sun at high noon.
The overwhelming sensation of joy that I experienced from my children’s progression, combined with the smiles that were left on my little ones’ faces, left me with no other logical choice but to switch my major from Business Management to Elementary Education. I expressed my idea to my more than supportive husband and thereafter, our family took a leap of faith, opening up our home and the very first Bottles-N-Backpacks location to the community in 2004, and we have yet to look back.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating the path from Business Management to Elementary Education and founding Bottles-N-Backpacks has been both rewarding and challenging. The journey has been a mix of smooth strides and steep climbs.
One significant challenge was the initial adjustment to the educational field from a business-oriented background. Adapting to the intricacies of pedagogy, child development, and curriculum planning required dedicated learning and continuous effort. Additionally, establishing and growing Bottles-N-Backpacks came with its set of hurdles. From securing suitable locations to crafting engaging, hiring the right staff, effective educational programs, every step demanded resilience and creative problem-solving.
Financial challenges were also part of the journey. Starting a childcare center involves considerable initial investment, and sustaining and expanding it over the years requires strategic financial management. Despite these challenges, the joy and impact on the children’s lives have made every obstacle worthwhile. It’s been a dynamic journey with its share of ups and downs, ultimately contributing to the growth and success of Bottles-N-Backpacks.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Bottles-N-Backpacks, our work is rooted in a profound commitment to the holistic development of children and the well-being of the families and communities we serve. We specialize in providing not just childcare but a comprehensive, family-oriented approach that extends beyond our center walls.
What sets us apart is our unwavering belief in the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Recognizing that a child’s influence extends far beyond the classroom, we are dedicated to weaving our programs, services, and opportunities for greatness into the fabric of the households and communities we touch. This philosophy is not just a slogan; it’s our driving force and a solemn pledge to contribute to building a better tomorrow.
We take pride in fostering environments that nurture children not just academically but also mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Our commitment to this comprehensive approach is what defines us, and it’s what we are most proud of.
In essence, Bottles-N-Backpacks isn’t just a childcare center; it’s a community hub for growth, support, and collective investment in the future. We stand tall in our mission to be more than an educational institution – we’re a village dedicated to the flourishing of every child in mind, body, and spirit.
