Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Berg.
Hi Dean, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing comedy at a very young age. I’d stay up late watching The Tonight Show and Comic Relief, then spend the next day trying to imitate my favorite comedians like Howie Mandel, Bob Nelson, Andy Kaufman, and George Burns. I was hooked on how they could make people feel something through laughter.
As life went on, I took other paths, but that love for comedy never left. Eventually, I stepped on stage for real — and it felt like coming home. Since then, I’ve performed everywhere from small-town bars to big venues, competed in roast battles, and built a growing following through my podcast Move the Mic Stand (now on Pandora) and viral TikTok clips.
My story is about finding my way back to that kid who stayed up too late watching comedy — and finally handing him the mic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Balancing comedy, a full-time career, and family life is no small feat. Add in professional axe and knife throwing, and my schedule looks like a circus act. But I’ve learned that’s where growth happens — in the chaos.
There have been setbacks, from losing gigs to self-doubt to industry politics, but every challenge has become material for a joke or a lesson for the next set. I’ve learned that consistency beats perfection. The goal is simple: keep showing up, keep improving, and keep turning pain into punchlines.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a stand-up comedian, podcast host, and professional axe and knife thrower based in Wisconsin. I’ve performed throughout the Midwest, opening and featuring for national acts including Joe List, Mario DiGeorgio, Rob Little, WWE’s Hornswoggle, Kill Tony Golden Ticket winner Ric Diez, Ryan Goodcase, Joe Stapleton of PokerStars, and Sam Rhodes. I’m also the regular opener and feature for veteran comic Rob Brackenridge.
I was a finalist in the Palm Springs International Comedy Festival and have competed in the World Axe and Knife Throwing Championships with appearances on ESPN. Whether it’s a mic or an axe, I’m always aiming to hit my mark — and make people laugh in the process.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite memories is staying up way past bedtime to watch stand-up on TV, trying not to laugh too loud and wake anyone up. I’d practice bits in front of the mirror the next day, pretending I was on stage. At Family Events I was often called in from playing outside while the adults gathered around and I’d perform for them. Those moments shaped everything that came after — they were my first taste of what I do now.
And funny enough, that same sense of wonder came back years later when my kids took me axe throwing for Father’s Day. It reminded me what it feels like to discover something new and love it instantly — that mix of excitement, focus, and pure joy that started it all.
