Conversations with Davis Nixon and Nikki Finn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Davis Nixon and Nikki Finn

Hi Davis Nixon and Nikki Finn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since we were children, both Davis and I have held a deep love for film. My father used to describe me as a
‘magnet’, the only one of my three siblings who you could always find, “less than five inches away from the TV.”
And Davis’ appreciation for film started as soon as he picked up his first camera before the age of 10. As two
young home movie-makers, we documented life as we saw it – unknowingly creating family archives of memories
and moments in time. This mutual, life-long passion for true-to-life filmmaking brought us
together in 2016; first as co-workers, then as friends, and now as collaborators and the co-founders of Reprise
Post – a boutique post-production company in Southwest Detroit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So in March of 2020, Davis and I decided the best thing we could do for our careers would be to quit our full-time jobs as staffed editors at a creative agency and start our own post-production company. Yes, March of 2020. So starting a company at the start of a global pandemic required a lot of untapped tenacity that we both weren’t convinced we even had. We also had zero experience in owning a business. It was a very unsettling time to say the least.

However, despite the uncertainty of the world we were living in, Davis and I were determined to make our dream of owning a post-boutique a reality. We knew we had strong enough skillset, passion, and ambition to eventually result in success. And here we are over 4 years later! We know we still have a lot of accomplish, but still we are very proud of all of the work we have achieved so far.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Davis and I pride ourselves on telling stories that matter at a cinematic scale, all with a
simple approach: authenticity over everything. We see film as the most effective tool for generating impact, and
seek to use film as a platform to showcase real narratives of everyday people who do extraordinary things.

Our desire is to use film as a means for spreading awareness around unknown struggles, uncelebrated victories, or building compassion. It’s this mindset to create change that drives us as editors. It’s so powerful.

Our creative style is eclectic, deeply collaborative, and ever evolving – influenced by the likes of editors Thelma
Schoonmaker, Walter Merch, Joi McMillon and Jennifer Lame. We aim to reinvent what’s already been done, and tell real stories with an artistic flair. As a partnership, we bring our individual perspectives together to create a singular, solid vision for audiences everywhere to witness and enjoy.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Every part of life involves risk, whether you make a decision or not you are still choosing a path. Obviously the stakes are higher when money is involved, which makes it scary, but we’ve found it is important to keep that mindset. There is no growth without risk – creatively or with our business. And we’ve found so far that failing at something tends to not be quite as bad as our minds make it out to be – but rather a lesson to learn and grow from.
