Conversations with Christopher Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Barnes.

Hi Christopher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My fitness journey is built on a straightforward belief: consistent effort, measured intensity, and proper nutrition can help anyone build a physique and a level of performance they never thought possible.

I was fortunate to learn the value of exercise at a young age, but my time in the Marine Corps completely redefined my view of human potential. Serving alongside some of the most dedicated, highly conditioned individuals I’ve ever known showed me what the human body is truly capable of when pushed with purpose.

Driven to share that insight, I became a personal trainer to help others reach their own goals. Over the years, that passion led me to competitive bodybuilding, earning a nutrition coaching certification through NASM, and most recently, earning my pro card with the Organization of Competition Bodies (OCB).

Every step of this path has reinforced that an extraordinary physique doesn’t require shortcuts—it just takes daily discipline, structured training, and a commitment to the process.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
”If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
-Frederick Douglas-

I don’t believe one should strive to struggle for progress. But avoiding struggle almost guarantees stagnation.

I could give you an extensive list of all my shortcomings, including my general stature, my subpar baseline athleticism, or the constant struggle with paralysis by analysis.

But there are obviously significantly darker struggles that I think everyone deals with. And the truth is, sometimes just showing up is a bigger win than anyone will ever know.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My primary profession is a Licensed Paramedic, which gives me a direct, daily vantage point on the critical importance of long-term health. While every emergency is unique, my career serves as a constant reminder that taking proactive care of your body is more vital than most people realize.

Through my fitness brand, Undertone Physique, I specialize in high-level contest preparation, nutritional strategies that evolve into understanding flexible dieting, and sustainable physique transformation. What sets my work apart—and what I am most proud of—is a fierce commitment to client autonomy.

Too many people spend years with trainers without ever learning how to build their own routines or structure their own meal plans. While I enjoy long-term partnerships with my clients, my ultimate goal is education. My top priority is developing clients who don’t need me.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory revolving around fitness, and health is one where me and my cousin would stand on tree stumps and throw a tennis ball at (at… not to) each other.

If you missed the catch, you had to do twenty pushups. I was so bad at this that the number of push ups I can do to this day it’s quite ridiculous.
